This selection of Levertov's poems, published over six decades, shows what a versatile writer she was, as well as giving insights her often passionately-held interests and the twists and turns of her life. As a snapshot of a busy and `engaged' writing career, it's not surprising that there's some unevenness in tone - the Vietnam War-era protest poems `Advent 1966', `The Burning Babe', and the excerpts from `Staying Alive' now sounding somewhat laboured and too-obviously polemical, for example. By contrast, her poems on married life and divorce run through a range from celebratory (`About Marriage', `The Ache of Marriage') to elegiac (`A Woman Alone', `Wedding-Ring'). She's also a lyrical poet when celebrating the natural world ('Witness', `Effacement', and `Celebration', for example) and the transitory but intensely vivid nature of the present moment (`Once Only', `Living', and `First Love'). Perhaps most fascinating is the development of her religious sensibility, from agnosticism (`Mass for the Day of St. Thomas Didymus') to the later, more mystical and sure faith of `The Avowal', `In Whom We Live and Move and Have Our Being', and `Flickering Mind'. Inevitably, no selection can be perfect, but this is pretty comprehensively representative, and well worth spending time with.
