Product Description

Product Description

The English Hungarian poet takes us inside his love-hate relationship with his adoptive country. He is both outsider and insider, viewing his two countries from a distance as well as with intimate knowledge and delicate understanding, and in the powerful climax of the title-sequence, imagines England destroyed by five apocalypses.

About the Author

George Szirtes was born in Budapest in 1948, and came to England with his family after the 1956 Hungarian upraising. He was educated in England, training as a painter, and has always written in English. In recent years he has worked as a translator of Hungarian litrature producing editions of such writters as Agnes Nemes Nagy, Oto Orban and Zsuzsa Rakovsky. He also co-edited Bloodaxe's Hungarian anthology The Colonnade of Teeth. After four collections with Secker and five with OUP, he published his hungarian retrospective The Budapest File with Bloodaxe in 2000. He lives in Norfolk and teaches at Norwich School of Art and Design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visionary grotesque human, 23 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This is a brilliant book, probably the best of Szirtes. It has the older poems from the earlier books but it's the new section that glows brightest, especially the title sequence of twenty-five poems about the destruction of England, which is, at the same time, a history of the place in his time there. Like most of Szirtes's poems these are highly formal constructions but the language is direct and natural and the imagery wild, clear, sometimes surreal. And yet it's very human, full of the small details of people's lives, and complex and intense feeling. There are long sonnet sequences too, the most lyrical of them, Backwaters: Norfolk Fields, which is as beautiful a piece of writing on regional England as has appeared since the war. It seems as though Szirtes's verse has been growing clearer, more open in the last ten years. Prayer for My Daughter is a virtuoso piece of comedy and tenderness that builds on and departs from Yeats's suspect masterpiece. But everywhere you look there is vigour and brilliant, almost tangible light. An English Apocalypse is an important piece of work. If you like this you might read Derek Mahon or Brodsky or Michael Donaghy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, 17 Sep 2006
George is the best modern poet I've come across.
I've had and continue to have the good fortune to be one of the students he teaches at the NSAD in Norwich. His writing is at once distinctive and a pleasure to read. He has a way of taking ordinary, every-day objects or actions and making them into something special.
