Product Description

Review

'This is such a striking first book that at any age it would be remarkable - from a teenage writer it leaves you excited that there may be so much more to come' - TIME OUT 'Pollard writes entirely and authentically out of the excited anxieties of female adolescence: its quixotic hopes, its merciless bitchiness and its maiming disappointments...The vioelnt colours, the abrupt swerves of thought and the wilfully obscuring bruising of Pollard's poems distinguish them from the usual twenty-something constructions' - THE TIMES

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for all cynical, humorous and intelligent beings!, 16 May 1999
By A Customer
Although I did not purchase this book from here, I am writing to tell people not to miss it! With a total of 26 poems in "The Heavy-Petting Zoo", there is (yes here comes that awful cliche) something for everyone. With the dramatic and lucidly picturesque Nomad, the subject teasing Bridesmaid, the cynically funny A Friday Night at the End of the Millennium and my personal favourite Poem for my Future Love. Not a "heavy read", unless you want it to be! Buy this book and change your way of thinking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Voice of the nation's lost youth? Perhaps..., 8 Jun 2000
By A Customer
In her bitingly satirical and often abrasively truthful poetry, Clare Pollard doesn't waste her words - but what wonderful words they are. Barely out of her teens, Pollard knows well the pressures, issues and situations which affect today's seemingly disaffected youth, and captures the internal strife of her generation beautifully. It's all here - responses to the pressures of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll - arranged aesthetically on the page ready to blow your mind with that all-important "god, it's so true" factor. A must read for all Chemical Generation X-ers, all those lost, angry confused teens...these poems, like their author, are sharp, intelligent, angst-ridden, and insightful. Buy it. Now.

1.0 out of 5 stars Was this calculated?, 29 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I am sorry to say that all I saw of these poems as deliberately, and without emotion, words put together in a neat (yet quirky) fashion. I see Sylvia Plath, Simon Armitage and Ted Hughes mixed in an (admittedly) clever manner. Interesting reading as modern published poets are few and hard to come by. I look forward to reading the book next year!
