5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent but understandable, both real and surreal., 10 Dec 2001
A neatly presented book made up of poems and stills from the poem-film they were written for (Words on Film, BBC2.)
The poems form a loose narrative around the poet's
own experiences of working as a probabtion officer in the Ashfield Valley Estate, Rochdale.
The poetry is written in a style that is simple, appealing (it mostly rhymes)and interesting it its use of imagery, forming a blend of the real and surreal. It is intelligently written in a way that can be taken on several layers and leads the reader to ponder over the ambiguity in many of the poems.
An interesting change to the usual, cliche portrayal of run-down araes in the North.
In my opinion, some of the best of Armitage's work.
