5.0 out of 5 stars A rare commodity - an excellent racing/gambling book., 25 May 2000
By A Customer
Forget the tired biographies of worthy jockeys and trainers, this book cuts to the real soul of the sport - gambling. The core of the book concerns a series of essays on the history, culture and technicalities of betting on racing. These are well researched, well written and unearth a host of 20th century characters which many punters will enjoy reading about. These essays are interlaced with details of the author's own gambling forays, which make for compelling reading. The final chapter's account of a small sting at Redcar is outstanding, one is so involved with the story that it feels like taking part. The adrenaline flow produced by reading it is akin to that produced by having an over-big wager of one's own.

The author is a true lover of the greatest 3 days of the year and writes about Cheltenham better than most. These descriptions are worth the price of the book on its own. However much you think you know about the betting world you are guaranteed to get something from this book. Put down that biography and read a Licence to Print Money instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated these days, but a classic, 3 Sep 2003
By Paul Robinson (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews

This book was written some years ago - back at the start of the 1990's. At the time, gambling in the UK was a different proposition to these modern times with well-established betting exchanges and strong spread betting markets.

It's dated nature doesn't detract much from the core of the book however. An excellent read in all, covering the antics of a man who is keen to pull off a coup and have a good time following a sport he loves. Interspersed with his own gambling biography, the author gives a good, comprehensive and fair history of bookmaking and gambling both on the turf and the changes that came about when off-course gambling became legalised. In all, one of the most fascinating books I've ever read on the subject.

However, it's dated nature does occasionally get in the way. Exchange bettors of the opinion that betting shops are awful, smokey, smelly places full of undesirables who have little clue about racing, will find a soulmate in the author. He writes continuously about how betting in the UK needs to change, and much of the change he urges for, has now happened. We're still some way off, but I suspect the author is a much happier man in the modern UK betting scene.

He refers at one point about aspirations for the book to become a classic. He succeeded. It is a classic. It's now though, unfortunately, a dated classic. If the author wished to re-visit his transcript and update some of his writing to adapt to exchange betting, or perhaps produce another volume, I'm sure that extra star would be given.
