Product Description

Product Description

The story of how the Irish national football team has been transformed from also-rans to being the most successful team in the British Isles. It examines the main reasons for the team's success - generous FIFA laws of eligibility, allowing British-born players to qualify for a place because Ireland was the birthplace of a parent or grandparent, and a series of tough, high-profile managers, culminating in Jack Charlton.

(REAL NAME)
This is a fantastic book. I'd read Jack Charlton's autobiography (Very recommended ) and wanted to get more but after 50 pages of a 200 page book no mention of Jack! I realised that this is NOT a book about Jack rather the Irish's phoenix like resurgence. I was hooked. Rowan knows his stuff and the quotes flow thick and fast. It's really a story in 4 parts. Previous managers and how they had a sisyphean(*??) like struggle against an Irish FA bunch of freeloaders more interested in going to Poland for duty frees and hookers.(only 1 official went to the match. The rest 'stayed at the hotel to get drunk'.
This leads nicely into how Jack tamed the committee and made Ireland the team that it was. Anglos and all! I read this warts and all and found I still respected Jack even more. I can see why they say 'Jack can't buy a drink in Ireland'. He has done more to heal the Anglo -Irish divide that many others before. (* Look it up I had to!)
All in all Paul Rowan has written a brilliant book recommended!
