Product Description

Product Description
Scrambling, the middle ground between hill-walking and rock-climbing, is rapidly becoming a highly popular pursuit, both for hill-walkers, seeking a greater challenge and for general mountaineers interested in the classic routes on Scotland's finest mountains. Scrambling often offers both the untrammelled freedom of the hill-walker and the more immediate excitment of the rock climber, but normally without the cumbersome clutter of ropes, karbiners and other rock-climbing paraphernalia. This book is a guide to scrambling the best routes in Scotland. These include the well known classic routes such as Aorach Eagach, An Teallach, Stac Polly and the Cuillin Ridge, but also many lesser known ones such as the Northern Pinnacles of Linthach and Lurgainn Edge of Cul Beag. In addition to these 50 route descriptions another 40 or so routes are mentioned, most with brief descriptions. The book is divided into four parts, each covering the scrambles in a particular geographical location of Scotland. Each route description is accompanied by a sketch map and a photograph. Each scramble has been graded to ensure you know exactly what you are climbing. A technical appendix entitled "Technical Skills and Ropework" has been contributed by the climber Martin Moran.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide to classic scrambles, 10 Jan 2003
By Mr. N. Richardson "nwjr" (Inverness, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book to add a little spice to an otherwise standard Munro-bagging career and it really is a fine little guide. There are a great many classic scrambles in this book though it is by no means exhaustive - yet I think by definition scrambling is all about freedom and not necessarily adhering to the guidebook statutes. Skye is covered in greatest depth as befits our most challenging UK mountain arena, and although a regional guide might do the area more justice, there are certainly more than enough routes to keep you tied in knots for a good while. On the mainland you get all the classics, such as found on The Ben, Glencoe, and Sutherland amongst many others you may not have thought of. A fairly comprehensive description is given for each route, though with getting excessive, and although there are no OS-type maps, occasional sketches are included to clear up route matters (hand drawn ridge-type maps are included for each climb). Each route is given statistical info such as time, grade, distance etc, and also a somewhat arbitrary "Quality" rating. Also included is a selection colour prints to get your breath baited during those long winter months. The volume itself, although hardcover, is by no-means as bulky as an SMC guide and so is just about at the limit of what you might want to stuff into a rucksack. All in all and excellent wee guide to get the idle mind plotting.
