Product Description

Review

'This book is an excellent guide to some of the finer points of both antique and contemporary jewellery, not least because of the vast quantity of photographs and illustrations, and will be of great use to dealers and collectors.' Antiques Bulletin.

Product Description

This essentially practical book, Understanding Jewellery, now available in a revised and fully updated third edition, is unique in explaining why jewellery values vary and the individual points important for each category. A major section is devoted to the identification of the major gem-stones and the testing methods to assess quality and detect fakes. Explanations are given in a straightforward, uncomplicated manner with a text largely linked directly to specific illustrations. This makes the assimilation of the information much easier than in traditional text dominated books. The authors, both jewellery experts, evaluate many millions of pounds' worth annually and thus handle a complete cross-section of what is available on the market. They have specially selected the hundreds of superb colour illustrations to show what to look for and, equally important, what to avoid. Whether interested in the history of fashion, deciding what to buy or simply to enjoy a visual feast of beautiful objects, this book will serve as an invaluable reference and represents outstanding value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating, 18 Sep 2004
By A Customer
After an introductory chapter, giving a brief synopsis of basic equipment and a more detailed summary, stone by stone, of the common gemstones plus pearl and amber, the authors cover tackle the enormous field of jewellery from the late 18th century to 1980. Chapters cover a few decades at a time, and are broken down into types of ornament: necklaces, bracelets etc. Whilst the writing is admirably detailed and explanatory, the particular benefit of this book is in the many illustrative photographs, principally of items that have passed through the auction rooms of Sothebys (the auction values, as in 1994, are summarised at the back of the book). The large number of photographs means that one can see for oneself, very clearly, not just an example of a particular style, but its variants and subsequent development: thus gaining a 'feel' for style and period that can prove invaluable when looking at jewellery for oneself.
