Based partly on the original importers' catalogues and partly on the wide range of pieces handled by the author Bryan Catley, a leading specialist in the subject, this book covers a comprehensive range of art deco figures. Between the wars, an entirely "modern" style of decorative sculpture emerged which was a complete break with the heavy romantic late 19th century schools, and was totally in sympathy with the vibrant young society of the 1920s. The use of bronze and ivory for the great number of these sensual figures in no way obscures the the fact that many are of exceptionally high quality; add to this their sense of movement and rhythm and one realises that the large sums thay now command is a reflection of a discriminative international collectors' market. This new revised edition provides a comprehensive listing of the great variety and range of figures, of which there are still more to be found.

About the Author

Bryan Catley's original interest in the subject was fired when he inherited an art deco figure from his late grandmother's art collection. During his student days at engineering college and after he was inspired to go on and buy every figure he could afford. Later he and John Sparrow set up the business known as 'Catspa' which, for many years before their retirement, was synonymous with Art Deco sculpture.

This book has been eagerly awaited as the new edition of the standard work covering figures from the late 19th century to the 1930’s. This is essentially a large photo collection containing hundreds of black and white photographs and some in colour. The text is sparse in the extreme being confined to a few introductory pages. Likewise there is little commentary with the photographs. I found this a disappointing experience. This is not the book for those who have a large appetite for information about these beautiful sculptures (though I don’t think that’s been written yet). The book may be useful for auction houses who seek to identify individual pieces but even for them it is limited as some reasonably well known pieces seem not to be included.

Over 1,000 photographs of the most important works of the period. There are very short biograhies of the artists but no details of signatures or identifying marks. The book is useful for authenticating a particular piece. The book is not aimed at educating those not already very familiar with the works shown. It has almost no editorial content and does not give estimates of value or rarity. Of use only to serious collectors or dealers. But nevertheless the largest collection of figure photography in one book that the reviewer has come across.
