4.0 out of 5 stars Youth.....we need them!, 15 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Youth (Paperback)
Missionaries eventually realised it, youth workers see the desperate need for it, yet the church has simply ignored it!

Quite simply, Andy Hickford calls the church to consider the lessons learned from years of missionary pioneers who have sought to reach differing cultures in relevant and appropriate ways that they can understand, work and worship in. Not surprisingly so, Christian youth workers have been taking this approach for years!

Hickford's thrust is for the 'Adult' church's essential need to allow herself to be enriched from the youth, appreciating the many different ways that they are reached and taught. The challenge of allowing them freedom to explore new ways of doing church that is relevent and appropriate to them. And as we stand and gaze, and actually take more notice, we may actually learn something ourselves of how to reach, teach and keep a generation of diverse adults in our world today.

This book is for both youth workers and Church leaders in whatever capacity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Integrating Youth culture in to an Adult cultured church., 21 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Youth (Paperback)
While this book is based around the Youth ministry of Andy Hickford. He gives valuable insight in relating to young people in church, both in terms of meeting their needs in worship, outreach (evangelism) and teaching, but also in dealing with issues which arise from cultural differences between young people and adults.

He shows how creative ideas from youth congregations can bring fresh ideas in to Adult meetings and help make the church culturally relevant not only to existing Christians but also non-christians as well.

In the last three chapters Andy goes on to show that it is not enough to have a youth meeting with the trappings of the youth culture but also to provide them with Adult teaching and guidance. He looks at how the lessons learnt from missonaries can be applied to help us see our own cultural blindness and to cross over in to youth culture not only in terms of "look and feel" but also the heart of the youth.

For me the obvious question I was left with was "is a youth congregation destined to be integrated into an adult congregation at some later date or is it more appropriate for the youth congregation to plant a new church ?" either way having read the book I now realise it is essential to have a youth congregation in our church, if the church is to function both as a home for existing christians but also to attract non-christian children and their parents.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neatly done, 31 Jul 2006
By Cazza (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
Andy is enthusiastic about his subject, clued up about youth culture and understands that, as Christians, reaching young people means being culturally relevant. I agreed with everything he had to say, although the book didn't quite hold my attention as much as it could have if there had been more practical and biblical application. I found that the book occasionally slipped into the trap of simply stating facts and figures, which is perfectly fine for a book about the history of youth culture, but not for one aimed at changing the mindset of today's church leaders. Please don't let this dissuade you from reading it. I would especially recommend it to brand new youth workers or youth pastors who have little experience of practical youthwork (detached youthwork in particular) in a local church setting. Follow this up by reading 'What every volunteer Youth worker should know' by Danny Brierley which is the more practical of the two. You will find that they perfectly compliment each other.
