Product Description

Book Description

Christians helped to pioneer the modern-day Youth Service. Now, after years of decline, the Church has rediscovered its commitment to young people, employing more youth workers than any other institution.

But in recent years a duel has developed between ‘secular’ youth work and ‘sacred’ youth ministry that undermines this.

Danny Brierley presents the case for a joined-up approach that draws on the strengths of both sides. Combining the popular and the spiritual, he analyses the foundations, values and practice of youth work and ministry in a way that will provoke, encourage and inspire all those committed to serving the young.

"Joined Up is a provocative, stimulating and challenging read for everyone concerned with the development of youth work that is professionally delivered, culturally integrated and authentically Christian."
Steve Chalke, Oasis

"Thoughtful, theological reflection on the philosophy of Christian youth work make this an important read for anyone who is serious about gaining a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of youth work and ministry."
John Buckeridge, Youthwork Magazine

"Many work with young people without necessarily thinking about it, while a smaller number of academics think about youth work without necessarily doing any. Danny Brierley breaks this mould, by being both a practitioner and a theorist. Both gifts are evident in this book, which will provoke, challenge, inform and resource you."
Gerard Kelly, Spring Harvest

"At last a book that seeks to address the current stand-off between youth ministry and youth work. Perhaps there will always be tension but it should be creative and dynamic rather than destructive. Danny Brierley offers no easy solutions but provides a helpful theological framework for discussion."
Claire Leas, Amaze

"Danny Brierley’s book is published at a very critical time for both the future of the Youth Service and the mission of the Church in the 21st century. It doesn’t pull any punches about the current struggle between youth work and youth ministry which has led to real divisions particularly among evangelical Christians and real suspicions about motives from those in the secular youth work world."
Bishop Roger Sainsbury, Chair of the National Youth Agency

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, insightful and user friendly., 25 Jul 2005
It's great to read something that scratches where it itches. Danny's book has really helped me to think about the relationship between youth ministry and youth work and get my head around exactly what it is I've been doing all these years! The book's strength lies in its relevancy. I feel as though I have more of a grip on the bigger picture of the work that I am involved in and how it relates to the wider world. That's a good feeling! Plenty to think about and work out still - but there is more of a significant framework now to work from. Thanks Danny!

This book really should be read by everyone who works with youth people. It would give great insight into church work for those who work with the youth service and insight for Christian workers into understanding working with youth people ourside the church.

If nothing else you get a greater appreciation for te four core values of youth work: voluntary participation, empowerment, equality of opportunity and informal education, and its place inside and outside the church as well as a clear theological grounding.

This is a very important book especially for church based youth workers...read it!
