Review
'As a panoramic account of the Yugoslav idea and its development over the twentieth century, Explaining Yugoslavia deserves a wide readership.' -Times Literary Supplement'Allock fulfills the promise of his book's title in a way that will surprise most readers A... The book's assertions will provoke controversy, but its breadth is unchallenged.' -Library Journal'There is much more of interest in Allock's sophisticated and intelligent book. He has sensible and reasonable arguments for the weakness of civil society.' -The New York Review of Books

Product Description
This text charts the continuities and discontinuities underlying the apparently confused transformation of the South Slav lands over the last 150 years. As well as the political dimension, it deals with the semi-peripheral position of the region in relation to metropolitan Europe and the process of modernization. Other themes include the passing of peasant society, the emergence of new class and economic structures, kinship, clientship, religion and atachment to locality. The text aims to explain how and why th estructures of South Slav society have changed, for better or worse, since the mid-19th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something you wanted to know about Forner Yugoslavia but were unable to find?, 21 April 2007
By Dmitry Pozhidaev (Belgrade, Serbia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Is there something you wanted to know about Former Yugoslavia but were unable to find? How was Yugoslavia formed? Why did it collapse? And what happened in between? Well, you will find the answers in this book. It is extraordinary by the breadth and variety of subjects it covers: industry and trade, social realtions, development of democracy and civil society, forging of national identity, violence in South Slav lands, etc.

However, the volume is not a brick-a-brack collection of anecdotes and facts. All the subjects are considered from one theoretical perspectove: modernity and modernization. The volume contains interesting and theoretically significant digressions on the connection between modernity and democracy, role of civil society, construction of national identity. The book therefore is not only of historic interest although read from this point of view it is both interesting and informative. But probably more importantly, the book develops topics which continue and will continue to define the development of the Balkans. Will the predictions about future developments in the region that the author makes in the last chapter called "Quo Vadis, Jugoslavijo" come true? We shall see...
