Product Description

Synopsis
Ian Almond compiled this book following the success of his very own "Peak District Treasure Hunts" web site. There are 16 hunts altogether, which can take anything from 2 to 5 hours to solve, dependent on whether or not you look up the answers to the clues, provided at the end of the book! The Peak District National Park is already a popular destination for walkers of all ages, but if you like a challenge, have good powers of observation, or even fancy your chances at a spot of lateral thinking, you'll not be disappointed. Each hunt has a map reference, a starting point (eg a local pub) an estimated walking distance and time, plus a brief description of likely terrain. Set in the most scenic hills and quaint villages of the Peak District, these walks offer an intriguing day out. There are mystery tours centred around, for example, Hathersage and Eyam in the heart of the Peak District; or from Wildboarclough in the western part of the National Park to Bradfield near Sheffield in the north east. Within each hunt you'll find interesting and varied types of clues to solve - from word searches and grids to code words and calculations. Clues are, in the main, set around fixed items such as plaques, road names, monuments and even headstones. Once you have successfully solved each set of clues you're one more step along the way to reaching your final destination and that wonderful sense of satisfaction and achievement.

From the Author
This book contains sixteen mystery tours in picturesque areas of the Peak District National park. All 16 Treasure Hunts were originally constructed for the Peak District Treasure Hunts website and each one was successfully concluded. The hunts have been edited, improved and brought up to date and there is a Solutions section at the back for the user to peruse in case clues remain elusive to the Hunter, complete with maps, diagrams and photos. So why not spend a few days out in the Peak District this summer (or winter if you wrap up) and tax your brain against each one of these hunts. They are not easy, but see how much quicker you get by the time you've done them all. It's a day out with a difference!

5.0 out of 5 stars What better way to explore the Peak?, 30 Nov 2004
I love Treasure Hunts, especially when it means exploring the villages and scenery of the Peak District! And living in Sheffield, as I do, it's great to have the beauty of Derbyshire on our doorstep. I've written quite a few Treasure Hunts myself, and I know that there's a real art in getting the right balance: too much driving and it becomes a speed rally - too much walking and it's a slog; too easy and it's child's play - too cryptic or obscure and participants lose interest. Ian Almond's book gets it spot on! The Hunts in the book all originally took place in real time via the www.peaktreasurehunt.com website. I discovered the book first and, having bought it, tried out five of the hunts with members of my family. We managed to solve the majority of them (if you get stuck, the solutions are there, in the back). Even knowing you are only competing against yourself, there is still a great buzz from solving the clues. Don't, however, think that you can follow them from your armchair using maps, because you can't! Ian has skilfully crafted the hunts so that you have to get out there in order to solve the clues. Also, the clues involve (virtually) permanent signs and features, so they won't go out of date. Incidentally, we had a go at the most recent "live" hunt, which was quite exhilarating! We didn't win, though, so I guess we need to get some more practices from the book under our belt, so that we're ready for the next one. To summarize: if you like problem-solving and you enjoy exploring the Peak District, both in the car and on foot - buy this book!
