What better way to explore the Peak?, 30 Nov 2004
I love Treasure Hunts, especially when it means exploring the villages and scenery of the Peak District! And living in Sheffield, as I do, it's great to have the beauty of Derbyshire on our doorstep. I've written quite a few Treasure Hunts myself, and I know that there's a real art in getting the right balance: too much driving and it becomes a speed rally - too much walking and it's a slog; too easy and it's child's play - too cryptic or obscure and participants lose interest. Ian Almond's book gets it spot on! The Hunts in the book all originally took place in real time via the www.peaktreasurehunt.com website. I discovered the book first and, having bought it, tried out five of the hunts with members of my family. We managed to solve the majority of them (if you get stuck, the solutions are there, in the back). Even knowing you are only competing against yourself, there is still a great buzz from solving the clues. Don't, however, think that you can follow them from your armchair using maps, because you can't! Ian has skilfully crafted the hunts so that you have to get out there in order to solve the clues. Also, the clues involve (virtually) permanent signs and features, so they won't go out of date. Incidentally, we had a go at the most recent "live" hunt, which was quite exhilarating! We didn't win, though, so I guess we need to get some more practices from the book under our belt, so that we're ready for the next one. To summarize: if you like problem-solving and you enjoy exploring the Peak District, both in the car and on foot - buy this book!
