5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, 29 Jan 2008

This is a great book by a couple who know about walking with kids.

The walks are much more interesting than most in the series.

The Ullswater walk mentioned above is probably the best we have done with kids.

Ignore the words of peril and doom from Julian In Surrey!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly good, one shocker..., 11 Jun 2007
By Julian Richard Williams (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews

Picked this up to help us on our recent hols in the Lake District. Having done a couple of the 'lung busters' we decided to the do the 'Ullswater Ramble' which was rated in a similar way. It was dreadful - the track disintegrated into a highly rutted unnegotiable disaster - had to take the little one out and carry her - it was so bad that my wife could not physically push the ATP up the rocky ground - the drop around Aik Beck was so steep as to induce mild vertigo - In all seriousness this should be struck from the book - Also it is just shy of 9kms not the 7kms quoted. The picture for this walk is so unrepresentative it is laughable - taken on the only flat bit of track in the whole journey.

I would recommend changing or adding a grading for how rough the terrain is, not just how wet/muddy or how steep it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of the ATP books but ok, 19 May 2009
By Paul Jacques (Bradford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I partly agree with Julian Richard Williams about the Ullswater Ramble, having just done it on Wednesday 13th May 2009. The path is heavily used by Mountain Bikes (a few passed us along the way and near the end a large group of school children passed us) and in places is so badly rutted that we had to carry the pram. There were quite a few times we had to carry it. The uphill section is steep and rocky and quite hard going, but we managed it easily enough. It is a good walk, but a lot of places in the middle are not suitable for ATP's anymore. If we had the known this we would have used our Deuter Kid Comfort II Storm / Anthracite baby carrier instead of our Maxi-Cosi Mura 3 Stroller (Flamingo Slice) ATP. This is the hardest ATP walk we have done so far (we have done a lot from the other books, in particular the Yorkshire Dales and west Yorkshire books), but compared to tackling Grisedale Pike with my daughter in the baby carrier, it was easy. One thing that did annoy me about the book is that the distances are in Kilometres only. This is the only walking book of any kind I own that does this, and I own a lot of walking books.
