Product Description

Review

"... an invaluable friend and guide when visiting the beautiful Cheshire countryside and the varied delights of its pubs" - Joe Lawless (editor of the CAMRA guide Cheshire Ale).

Product Description

This is the first book to combine Cheshire's network of footpaths with its equally famous pubs, each offering a warm welcome, a hearty table and a well-stocked cellar. It's ideal for those with a connoisseur's interest in Real Ale, and for walkers wanting a convenient starting point, including the best pub lunches in Cheshire. There are 30 circular walks included, covering the entire county from west to east and north to south. Each walk is graded in terms of mileage and difficulty - so families with young children can choose the easy ones, and enthusiasts can find more challenging routes to work up a thirst!

1.0 out of 5 stars Or how to get lost with ease in Cheshire..., 26 May 2009
By Mr. S. J. Wells (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly, the pubs in this book are really nice and well worth a visit. That's the positive part over.

I have come to the conclusion, after getting lost for the 6th time at the weekend, that Jen Darling spent more time knocking back doubles in these establishments than actually recording accurately the walks themselves. My son, Junior and I, are fairly experienced walkers and are certainly no novices when it comes to following maps and guidelines. However, the author seems intent on using flowery, pretentious literary descriptions of the most mundane aspects of the walks whilst neglecting to provide an easy to follow guide to the walks themselves.

Jen Darling comes across like a frustrated novelist - a bad one at that. I've grown used to skipping over vast chunks of text revealing banal, useless, frustrating, flight of fancy descriptions of scenery and aspects of nature I could see for myself, only to find little or incorrect explanation of where to walk next. I'd find myself shouting at the book, "I don't care about the potential of seeing birds soaring, where are we?"

Instead of feeling relaxed and at one with nature, Junior and I experienced increasing bouts of frustration and anger as we tramped hopelessly looking for gates that weren't there and turning left when told instead of the correct right. I'm afraid to say that since I only have access to Junior at weekends we often spent much of the walk in silence as we took our frustrations out on each other. Since the weekend and the latest installment of 'Getting lost with Jen Darling' he has requested I only have access every two weeks. So thanks Jen, you've spoiled my life and my love of walking.

I digress. To sum up, unless you have the patience of a saint or have Jen Darling actually with you on these walks do not buy this book. Save your sanity, save your family.
