Product Description

Product Description

Here is a new side to Mallorca - an escape from the crowds. The diverse walks included will enable the rambler to discover rural traditions and explore quiet villages. The variety of scenery on this island is stunning - one can enjoy views from below and on top of magnificent mountains, or combine a coastal walk with a refreshing dip in the sea. As well as the presence of this blue Mediterranean backdrop, there are country strolls amid olive groves to be enjoyed, and more demanding rambles in the mountainous north-west of this dramatic island. Thoroughly researched with bags of background and historic information, the book also offers practical advice for walkers unfamiliar with Mallorcan access rights. Each walk is provided with not just a set of instructions but also with pointers to the many interesting sights to be appreciated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting places: dubious directions, 22 April 2002
By davewakeford@yahoo.co.uk (St Austell, Cornwall) - See all my reviews
The book certainly helps to get you started at some out of the way locations that you might not otherwise know about. On the first two walks we tried the way was barred at some point along the route. From the times which are given for stages along the route it would appear that the author has sprinted certain parts of the route and crawled on others. If you use this book allow at least an extra hour on each walk in case you get lost! We found "Mallorca North" by Brawn and Brawn to be much better researched and easier to follow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lost in Mallorca would be much more accurate, 1 Jun 2001
Graham Beech has obviously done a lot of research because all of the walks that we did in Mallorca in late May 2001 seemed very good. The major problem was the directions which we found at best erratic and on too many occasions totally misleading. Directions such as follow the main forest track as it curves right and then left possibly sound good in an armchair, on the plane or at a word processor. When that instruction is meant to keep you on the right route for 30 minutes, the route turns continously and is criss-crossed by a dozen similarly sized tracks, it is not that good. We did manage to follow the track but it took thirty minutes of constantly thinking about being lost before we were sure we weren't. This is just one of many examples. Suffice to say we have sent the book back without seeking recompense.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's great, 19 Jan 2004

Been to Mallorca several times. Walked loads, read several other walking books. If you speak Spanish or German you may find a better book - I don't know. But this is by far and away the best book for Brits wanting to walk on the Island. It's not about glossy pics (there are a few tourist level snaps in there but nothing more). It's a guy inspiring us to get off our butts, grab a cheap flight, find some beautiful walks and get round them without getting lost. Mallorca is not a tough place to walk in. You don't need OS quality to find your way around. What you need is a book that tells you a bit about the island, a bit about the local customs, a few words of warning concerning walking conditions, customs and regulations. And of course provides you with beautful walks. And that's what it does.
