Amazon.co.uk Review
Come on Cymru is a collection of short stories as fans of Wales and its league clubs. Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea, and members of the League of Wales recount their highs and lows with a trip down Memory Lane. More surprisingly, there are chapters on Hereford and Chester City, Wrexham's English cross-border rivals--but the excuse is that half of the Deva Stadium is in Wales, and anyway how else could you fill 144 pages with tales of Welsh success? The strange phenomenon of Wales' north/south divide also raises its ugly head on more than one occasion.
This book is readable although it does assume a degree of knowledge about the Welsh football scene. There is a good account of the Welsh clubs' success in Europe, but it does have a glaring omission of Wrexham's 1976 cup adventure when they reached the quarter- finals of the Cup Winners' Cup before losing to Anderlecht.
Although each chapter could stand alone, you must be a real supporter of all aspects of Welsh football if the book is to hold your attention from start to finish. But if, like many collections of sports stories, it is meant to be dipped into occasionally, then you are likely to find a few hours of interesting reading. Understandably, with the authors being fans, their tales are solely concerned with the trials and tribulations of their own clubs without looking at the wider picture of Welsh football. However, this does not detract from a book which is well worth a read.
