Review
Media Education Journal, # 37 Spring 2005: 'Kaveney's readings are backed by in-depth knowledge of SF literature, the medium where the genre thrives most effectively, which allow her to deal with the genre more successfully than many commentators.'

Product Description
Written by a world expert in Science Fiction, 'Reading Science Fiction Film' is both a hugely entertaining and enlightening read and a new critical approach to SF films that considers them as both autonomous creations and contributions to the genre and to the broader culture. Roz Kaveney looks at the movies of alien invasion and movie franchises, as well as offering deep readings of the 'Alien' quartet, of 'Dark City' and 'Strange Days'; extended consideration of the 'Star Wars' series, and Terminator films; and a celebration of Galaxy Quest and many other films. '...an incredibly necessary text -- arming the geeks with tools to read films for the DVD generation -- and possibly regeneration. Clear, simple text, in which an understanding of slash fiction is as important to the text as an encyclopedic knowledge of a hundred years of written SF, and what movies mean. - Neil Gaiman ''Works of serious pop-culch critique too often founder on either the Scylla or critical-theory pomposity or the Charybdis of triviality. Waking into Dream triumphantly avoids both. It's an exemplary book of its kind. For any other authors considering tackling this subject, it is the book to beat.' - Charles Shaar Murray Roz Kaveney is editor of and chief contributor to 'Reading the Vampire Slayer" (I.B. Tauris) now available in its new, up-dated edition. She is a freelance writer and editor, who also contributed to The Encyclopaedia of Fantasy and The Cambridge Guide to Women Writing in English.

'Waking into Dream' was always the working title for this collection of writings on science fiction film; like many working titles, it has served as a useful seed around which my ideas have crystallized in the two years I have taken to work on the book. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci Fi so good, 1 April 2005
This was recommended by Empire and as an avid sci fi fan I was curious and the rest, as they say, is history. There are two things that really come out of this book. Firstly that Kaveney is a film fan, and secondly that her readings of the films and their sources and alternative scripts is incredibly strong and very clever. This is one of those books you read where on every page you realise how stupid you were for not spotting an obvious point. Her reading of the four Alien fims is worth buying the book for. An excellent book. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost great, 19 Jul 2006
By Mr. B. J. PARKER (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great book if you're a fan of sci fi films and there is plenty of interesting facts and thoughts on each of the films she looks at, but she does tend to go above and beyond in her damning of some of them. Yes, she's a fan, but a fan with specific tastes. Her choice to pick out some truly overlooked films like Strange days and Galaxy quest was much appreciated and a joy to read, but she just didn't seem to 'get' alot of stuff. She seemed to spend more time finding gender issues in the Matrix to pin to the directors personal life than she spent contemplating the finale. As a James Cameron fan it was nice to see her praise him, but it gets a little gushing. I thought it was funny that she mis-spelt Renny Harlin's name but other mistakes were painful. I can imagine real fans reading the book and the leaps of faith in plot points she puts to paper could easily enrage many people as it did me. Having written about Buffy the Vampire slayer it was predictable that she would defend Joss Whedon's Alien film as 'full of heart' but again her mistakes in simple plot points and constant reference to sex and pregnancy become so annoying even by the look at the second film in her Alien case study. If you like the Alien films- get a book on them. If you like James Cameron- buy a book on his films.

Not really from Alien to the Matrix, more of a handful of great sci fi films and a lot of unneccesary bad mouthing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Effort!, 2 Oct 2006
By Ross Tyrie "insomniac dipso" (Kilmarnock,Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Roz Kaveneys book From Alien to the Matrix is an excellent read, almost a textbook for anyone who loves film, specifically the sci-fi genre. However, she seems a little over eager to please, and while her attempt to bring some lesser known or under-rated films to our attention(such as the excellent Strange Days)is commendable, her basic movie knowledge seems shockingly weak!
Too often, the author offers quotes from films that are blatantly innacurate or just plain wrong, suggesting that instead of watching these movies, she has pored over online versions of scripts instead.
Ultimately,I would still have to recommend this book to anyone interested in contemporary sci-fi,but perhaps more as a starting point to proper analysis of a genre that still has more to say!
As a footnote, any book that gives Aliens and Strange Days this kind of analysis is worth the money alone!
