Product Description
Book Jacket
Imagine a sitting room the size of a factory floor with riverfront views, or a treetop bedroom with a ceiling as high as a church nave. Imagine a kitchen as large as a telephone exchange with a canal on one side and a supermarket on the other. Now imagine how to make those spaces habitable without sacrificing their original character.

As the world shrinks in the slipstream of jet travel we begin to evaluate space as the greatest luxury of the 21st century. All around the world, warehouses, schools, sheds and factories are being reclaimed and recycled to create vast, airy accommodation with an unconventional twist. Converted Spaces spans the spectrum of successful conversions from industrial heritage to rural past--not all modern in style, but with an aesthetic that works for modern living.

The construction of adventurous living spaces from spacious architectural shells is one of the most innovative aspects of interior design and architecture today. Throughout the book the possibilities and the problems presented by these spaces are explored in detail. We see ingenious solutions to huge wrap- around windows, high ceilings, steel beams designed to hold heavy machinery, plumbing and services in inflexible places, as well as the means of heating, lighting and furnishing vast spaces.

A stunning visual sourcebook of the most creative and innovative interior designs, Converted Spaces presents an impressive collection of international homes, and includes the work of Andree Putman, Vincente Wolf and John Pawson. Six spectacular gatefold features show how it is done in practice. Each converted space is unique--you can do what you like, have what you want--these are homes with personality.

Synopsis
Vast, obsolete buildings are now taking on new life as people seek out living space. This work presents an international collection of conversions, including those of architects and designers such as Andree Putman and John Pawson. Through the designs and accompanying text, the reader witnesses how empty shells are transformed into unconventional homes.

This is a great source book for contemporary conversions. It is in the Conran style. I enjoyed the decorating ideas and the uniqueness of the spaces depicted. It is similar to Recycled Spaces by Vinny Lee which I also enjoyed. This is a designer book and most pictures show designer furniture however there are many ideas to gained and translated into designer style without the designer price tag.
