Product Description

Synopsis

More than 10,000,000 Ford Kent engines have been produced and power all Escort Mk I and Mk II models and their derivatives, the 1300 and 1600 Cortinas and the early Fiestas. This book is a guide to rebuilding and tuning the engine to improve efficiency, increase power output and obtain optimum performance. In addition to being a step-by-step practical guide to the work required in upgrading the Crossflow engine a brief history is also included with details of when introduced, what capacities were available and which cars used the engine.

2.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly dissapointing book., 5 Jul 2006
By M. Rigby-Jones (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been a "mini" enthusiast for many years I think I may have been spoilt by David Vizards excellent publications "How To Modify Your Mini", and especialy "Tuning BL's A Series Engine", widely considered as the bible on tuning the mini engine.

Having acquired a Sylva Striker kit car in need of some attention, I wanted to find out more about the tuning potnential of the Ford Crossflow engine fitted to the car. The title of this publication promised to put me on the path of Ford Crossflow enlightenment. How dissapointing then, that after 20 minutes spent perusing this tome I found very little in the way of specific tuning advice for this engine.

Read the book in more detail and you will be forced to the same conclusion that I drew: the author appears to have little or no experience in actualy performing any tuning modifications to this engine. The vauge and non-committal text regarding various possible modifictaions smack of someone whose knowledge finishes at simply rebuilding engines.

Whereas David Vizards books are loaded with extensive test results of both his own highly detailed cylinder head modifcations, and a vast range of commerical performance parts, this book simply shows you how to take a Crossflow apart and screw it back together again. The thoery of gas flowing cylinder heads, and the experience of established crossflow tuners is "fascinating" but "isn't a great deal of practical use to the home tuner" according to the author. That pretty much summarises the book I think.

If you have table with a wobbly leg, this book could come in very handy. If you want extract more power from Ford's Crossflow engine without paying other people to do it and you like getting your hands dirty then look elsewhere (and tell me when you find the D.V. equivalent).
