The news is that this is a first rate history of these British Isles. Far better, clearer and certainly funnier than anything i learned at school. A must for any history student who really wants to understand how we reached this stage in our evolution, how our country works[or doesn't] or who simply wants a good laugh. As a true reflection of life in Britain it is up there with Magna Carta and other such historical[or do i mean hysterical] documents.
Worth the price for Ian Hislop's introduction and Paul Merton's conclusion.

I tried my level best to like this book, having enjoyed the television series for many years. However, aside from the occasional laugh-out loud moment, the vast majority of the humour was laboured, obvious and already seriously dated by changes in current affairs since its publication (which was not that long ago). Most of the photos were too small/poorly reproduced to see and the diagrams were, on the whole, either clumsy or crude or - most often - both.

A whistle stop tour of Britain, both historical and modern, informed by a sharp eye for detail and the inclusion of interesting facts. At times it made me laugh aloud, and the prose had more than a hint of Ambrose Bierce's mordant wit. The only drawback to the book was the quality of the photo reproduction.

Am seriously considering not putting this in my husband's stocking as intended, but keeping it for my own entertainment.

I bought this as a gift for an avid 'Have I Got News For You' fan. I started reading it myself, as I am also a big fan of HIGNFY - but thought it was really weak. I'm glad no-one bought for me as a gift. I was not sad to wrap it up and send it on its way.

An excellent christmas stocking book. It made me smile on the tube to myself as I read it and would be perfect for christmas afternoons with the family. Full of excellent pub quiz trivia and nuggets about britain that I had no idea about.

Particularly like the diagrams and sketches through out the book illustrating a point - or in sometimes how un illastratable parts of British culture are!
