The Lost Journal gives the reader a fascinating insight into Bram Stoker's years leading up to his work as a writer of fiction
The entertaining Dublin stories show his Irish side and the tantalising tit-bits of shadows, mirrors and captured flies contribute to the future penning of his most famous creation "Dracula"
Found in the home of one of his great grand-sons, the journal has been meticulously edited by Dacre Stoker and Dr. Eluzabeth Miller.
A must for "Dracula" fans.

A fascinating insight into a very interesting bloke.
Well worth a read, especially if you enjoying writing yourself. It gives an interesting look into how a person took little notes on his surroundings, things which made him look twice and sometimes things that just made him laugh.
I love another reviewer's idea that it is like reading someone's tweets, only from over 100 years ago. It is entirely random at times, but that gives it so much charm.

I purchased the Lost Journal of Bram Stoker for my fiance's birthday. I heard about it coming out from NPR and then it wasn't released in the US. I was so happy to find this on Amazon UK because my fiance is a huge Dracula fan and he is just thrilled with my find.

HASH(0x8d27a090) out of 5 stars Stoker Revealed 8 Mar. 2012
By Derrick - Published on Amazon.com

Bram Stoker died 100 years ago, days after the Titanic sank. We know him as the author of Dracula, but long before Dracula, he was just a young Irishman, hoping to be a writer, practicing poetry, and enjoying a good joke. This Lost Journal (now found) is an amazing opportunity to get into the young mind of the Dracula author --to see who he was (law clerk) where he lived (Dublin, Ireland) what he thought about (everything from walking on the beach and unrequited love to drunken parties at Dublin Castle and sliding in vomit).

Dr. Miller and Dacre Stoker make interesting comments about Bram's entries, and as they say, some of the short notes are like twittering. Imagine decoding somebody's twitter messages 141 years from now in the year 2153 -- some of Stoker's notes are just that impossible- even for editors Stoker & Miller who have studied Stoker for years. The most obscure references will provide a field day for Irish history buffs and English professors who want to challenge their students of Gothic literature.

The editors say Bram Stoker never thought anybody would care about these notes so he wrote for himself, which is so revealing on many levels. If you are a Dracula fan, or just love history take a look at this.

Never thought about Bram's brothers and sisters, now I have their pictures. Which are, as they say, worth another 1000 words.

HASH(0x8d27a4a4) out of 5 stars Bram Stoker Revealed 8 Mar. 2012
By Vickie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Most people know Bram Stoker only as the author of Dracula. But even if he had never written Dracula, this journal is interesting. First of all, because it has only recently surfaced, and second, because it allows us to get to know the man as well as the writer. I sat right down & read it cover to cover, and now flipping back through, I can well imagine a new chapter in Stoker history shaping up, based on his own notes.

A few years ago, Bram Stoker's great-grandson found in his attic a journal that Stoker had kept during the 1870s while he was young and single, still living in Dublin. All of the entries (over 300)are published in this new book, researched by Elizabeth Miller and Dacre Stoker.

The insights provided into Stoker's life and personality are exciting and un-precedented. We get glimpses into his friendships at Trinity College, his office-mates at Dublin Castle, family members, his interest in athletics, as well as his travels around Ireland and on the Continent. We also get to know him better as a writer and see how his skills developed.

What surprised me the most was his sense of humor and keen Irish wit. I didn't expect the author of Dracula to be such a fun-loving guy who could make a joke out of almost anything. His entries give us a wonderful slice of the lighter side of life in Dublin, though the journal is not without its more somber and troublesome entries.

This book is a smorgasbord of anecdotes, riddles, meditative musings, descriptions, and personal observations. It is informative and entertaining at the same time.

I recommend it for any bookshelf or bedside table.

HASH(0x8d27a528) out of 5 stars A must read.... 10 Mar. 2012
By John Edgar Browning - Published on Amazon.com

Like Miller's BRAM STOKER'S WORKING NOTES FOR DRACULA, the present work, co-edited with Dacre Stoker, is simply a must read for fans and aficionados of Bram Stoker. We love looking at the inter-workings of the man who wrote DRACULA, a work that is now among the most prolific works in the world, certainly THE most prolific narrative, and character, in horror cinema. In DRACULA may be found the anatomy of Stoker's psyche and lived, socio-cultural experiences. In the present work by Miller and Dacre may be glimpsed a youthful Stoker and, in many ways, a youthful Dracula. Dracula's DNA literally floats on the pages. It's quite a remarkable thing.

Entertaining, light fun. I enjoyed reading this book...nothing too spectacular but the narrative moves along and the conversational quality is good. A good book for fans of the genre.
