Product Description

Review

'Built around Millar's candid and hilarious essay on the history of Kick-Ass, from page to screen... This book is designed to boot your bottom, and boot it hard.' --Empire

'Once again, Titan Books does an outstanding job of presenting a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of a film by providing fans access to the participants and their creative process.' --Blog Critics

'A fascinating insight into Millar's kamikaze passion for the project and his creative process [...] Stylishly assembled, it feels gratifyingly like a book made as much for Millar's own pleasure as ours.' --Total Film

It's a really good book for those who want to find out how the comic became the movie, in such a short time. It's loaded with commentary from Mark Millar, artist John Romita Jr., director Matthew Vaughn, the actors and production crew. They go on about the characters, casting and story and the funny incidents that happen during production, like Hit-Girl losing her teeth, or making weapons using stuff bought online.

High resolution film stills, set photos, comic panels and other production art fill the pages. Some of the pictures are so huge you can see the pores on the skin. There are also additional art drawn for the movie, like the drawings of villains by Nicolas Cage. Most of the blood in the book actually come from the comic panels. I haven't read the comics but the beautiful comic drawings entices me to check them out.

Note that there might be a bit of spoiler revealed but not really a big deal.

Slapped on the back cover is a parental advisory label warning of explicit content. Some of the funny quotes happen to be vulgar ones -- delivered by a kid no less -- and there are some nudity (small stills) as well. This book, just like the movie, is for the mature audience.

This book is an entertaining blend of outrageous fun and the mundane.

The book may at first appear deceptively thin of text, but it is in fact very well designed and full of fun and interesting information. Led by Mark Millar's words (although many others add their voice), we are guided through the conception and making of KA the movie, with also a very thorough insight into the comics. Packed with great pics, this is a real fun read and I would recommend it to anybody who enjoyed the movie and/or is interested at looking behind the scenes. Just be careful though: the book takes you through the whole storyline - including the end. So you might want to wait until after you've seen the movie before you read this book.

My first experience with Kick-Ass was watching the first movie a year or so ago one night on Film 4. I wasn't really expecting much, there was simply just nothing on and I flicked on a movie that I'd heard was very funny. Obviously I loved it and proceeded to buy every volume of Kick-Ass to hype myself up for the inevitable sequel, which I also really like. I have found myself adoring the books. While the adult nature might have been a little crude here and there, Kick-Ass is my favourite series by Mark Millar and when I read about a book analysing the transition from the book to film, I had to buy it. You don't understand. I HAD to buy it.

I like this book. I was expecting something that talked more about the film than the comic, but it actually gives an indepth look at how Mark Millar and awesome artist John Romita Jr conceived the idea from general ideas thought up beforehand as well as real life experiences. And from that, we see how they transitioned this into the popular movie, and there is so much in this fantastic book, from initial sketches, to costume designs, to how scenes were shot, and interviews with stars of the film such as Aaron Taylor Johnson (Dave/Kick-Ass) and Nicolas Cage (Big Daddy). If you're as hardcore a fan as I am (ok I don't like people who refer to themselves as hardcore fans of anything, but whatever) then you've got to buy this book. It fits perfectly with your comic book collection if you have an unhealthy obsession as I do to collect as many comics merch as you can.
