Product Description

Set in a dystopic New York of the late 21st century, this visually unique tale has done for graphic novels what Phillip K. Dick did for science-fiction and the Wachowski brothers did for cinema - turn worlds upside down and inside out!Anti-hero 'S' is a private investigator addicted to the hallucinatory drug "heavy liquid" and is being hunted down by a gang, while also searching for a mysterious art collector who can turn his substance of choice into a perfect sculpture. But there's more to heavy liquid than meets the eye...Written and illustrated by Eisner Award-winning artist Paul Pope, this future-noir thriller is fast-paced, gritty and altogether trippy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Liquid, 29 Nov 2002
This review is from: Heavy Liquid (Comic)
Paul Pope is a tricky character. Firstly, he falls into the category of what is commonly known as "Manga influenced." Although looking at his style, there's no "bug-eyes," no exaggerated shouting...but the influence is very clear. In panel structure, in camera movement and composition. Pope studied in Japan, looking at Manga as an art form, analyzing it, taking all of it in. Heavy Liquid reeks of everything that makes Manga such an interesting art form, mixed with the juicy, gorgeous colours and ink lines that can make the American medium just as intriguing.

Pope's story and art mesh incredibly well, it would seem weird him working with another writer, (or another artist, even.) The way which Pope draws buildings, and the way he presents this on the page, looks like an Otomo (Akira) piece, or an influence of. Pope creates his own world with Heavy Liquid and is continuing that universe in his new series 100% (which I'm enjoying that little bit more at the moment.)

Fans of Nick Hornby might like this book for the interaction of the characters (or sometimes the lack of) and fans of Blade Runner might enjoy it for the outlook of the future, the buildings, the ideas, the gadgets. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't dismiss this as a silly "tales of the future" type story, or as a "emo comics for emo boys" esque situation. This graphic novel tells a story, a damn good story that brings Pope's strenghts together in a compelling and orgasmic way.

This futuristic (yet at the same time, realistic setting) turns the piece into a science fiction story, but Pope firmly tells the story about the characters. Which is what he does best. He's a character writer/artist. This book reeks of it.
