Product Description

Product Description

As a professional 'cleaner', Jonathan Quinn disposes of bodies and ties up loose ends. Doesn't get his hands dirty, no wet work. But when he discovers he's been hired to vanish all traces of Steven Markoff, one of his best friends who just happened to work for the CIA, his job suddenly hits too close to home. This time, it's personal. Quinn is determined to get justice for Markoff. Plus, now, Markoff's girlfriend Jenny, who had been an assistant to an ambitious Congressman, has also disappeared. Racing from the corridors of power in Washington to the bustling streets of Singapore - along with his smart, eager apprentice Nate and brilliant, beautiful Orlando, his closest friend who's saved his life more than once - events quickly spiral dangerously out of control. With an addictive momentum and fascinating characters, "The Deceived" takes us on a thrilling, nerve-wracking journey. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid and fast moving, 7 July 2008
By N. Brett (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Deceived (Hardcover)
In a follow up to "The Cleaner" here we have more action with Quinn and his cleaner chums.
If you liked the first one, you will enjoy this one too - it has a little more characterisation and the author has become more comfortable with his characters and their inter-action.
Here we have the team tracking down the truth behind a friend's killing while searching for his girlfriend and avoiding the bad guys.
A solid, entertaining and fast moving thriller. This will occupy you well for a few hours and you will enjoy it, but this is no classic that you will recommend to your friends as something they MUST read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Marginal Improvement, 11 Aug 2008
By C. Green "happily low brow" (Faringdon, Oxon, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Deceived (Hardcover)
The Deceived is Brett Battles second novel after 'The Cleaner' and once again features Jonathan Quinn, the titular hero of the previous book.

As in 'The Cleaner' Quinn is once again pulled away from his day job as an operative who cleans up the mess left behind by covert intelligence operations by a personal matters; in this case the murder of an old friend. Once again he is joined in his adventures by his 'apprentice' Nate and his old friend Orlando.

In my review of The Cleaner I described it as being 'light on realism' and 'disposable'. The Deceived is very much a case of more of the same. Even if you buy into the idea of a world where there are people like Quinn whose sole (and based on the one bit of 'cleaning' he actually does) not very challenging role is to clear away the evidence of sensitive operations and who have 'apprentices' as if part of some work experience scheme for spies, the events that unfold often push the boundaries of realism. Trained intelligence agents behave in unbelievably naive ways, multiple gun men miss obvious targets, shootouts in public areas go unremarked on and hidden cabals pull the strings from behind the scenes. As with The Cleaner this is a Robert Ludlum book for the modern age.

As with is predecessor however, it all moves at a very rapid pace, which means you hardly notice the stretches in plausibility or logic. Only the most gaping of plotholes (such as why one character who leaves a cryptic hidden message behind before they're killed doesn't just reveal the name of the main bad guy instead) stand out. As a beach read or a way to kill a few hours on a flight The Deceived would be ideal. Shove your brain in neutral, enjoy the action and the ridiculous plot twists and try not to think about it too much.

As anything more than that though it really doesn't cut the mustard. There is no great sense of tension to keep you turning the pages. Its competently written but the characters lack depth and the locations lack atmosphere (Battles has obviously been to the places he describes but can't make them jump off the page). It is the thriller equivalent of fast food; it goes down easily but there isn't much to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, 10 Jun 2009

A good book to start what should be a good series if he can only ensure that his hero keeps up the good work and doesn't get too bogged down.
