Product Description

The Forgotten Legion - ten thousand legionaries made captive by the Parthians - has marched to Margiana on the edge of the known world. In its midst are Romulus, Brennus and Tarquinius, all men with good reason to hate Rome. Together the trio must face the savage tribes which constantly threaten the area. But other, more treacherous enemies lurk within the ranks of the Forgotten Legion itself. When all hope is lost, the three friends' character will be tested to the utter limit. Meanwhile in Rome, Fabiola, Romulus' twin sister, also fights to survive. Beset by enemies on all sides, she must travel to Gaul to find her lover, Caesar's right-hand man. There tribal rebellion under the charismatic chieftain Vercingetorix threatens not just Caesar's route to power, but his life and the lives of all who support him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for 3rd book, 8 Aug 2009
I qualify my review by saying I haven't read Iggulden, Scarrow et al, so I came to this series with no benchmark in the genre. The closest my usual interest gets is in reading military history, where my bias lies in accounts of the experiences of the foot soldiers, and that aspect is what drew me in to this excellent series.
Where the Forgotten Legion introduces the characters and plot, from the sweat and dust of the arena to the intrigues of the brothel - the Silver Eagle picks up where the action left off and brings it to another level. The action is relentless and it's scope is epic, blending the wars and politics of the Republic to adventures at the edges of the known world. The characters develop well as the twins mature and become more world-wise and Tarquinius is more dark and ambiguous. This book has been greatly enhanced by the addition of a very informative glossary.
The bottom line for me is that I'm hooked and can't wait to find out what happens next - the mark of a great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars too many visionaries, 1 Jul 2009
I bought the Forgotten Legion on e-book and read it on holiday-I enjoyed it . The Silver Eagle is also enjoyable but the slight element of mysticism in the first book has now been somewhat overplayed-several characters now have visions of the future .I would prefer Ben Kane to stick more to gritty historical fiction-but that is just a personal opinion (I will still buy the next one !)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but a little too unrealistic, 6 Jul 2009
I really enjoyed the first book in the series and was eagerly awaiting the second instalment. However, I was not particularly impressed with this effort. Although a good plot and some excellent action, I thought the story was badly spoiled by an excessive reliance on the soothsaying ability of Tarquinis, and then certain other characters to "see" things happening elsewhere or in the future. This seems to me a fairly unrealistic and lazy plot device which spoiled the realism of the book, pushing it away from historical fiction and towards fantasy, which isn't a genre I enjoy - if you do like historical fiction and don't mind a bit of fantasy you'll probably love this book. As an aside, I don't like to get too hung up too much on historical detail in these books, but I am wondering whether Kane is intending to simply merge the characters of Decimus Junius Brutus (who was one of Caesar's generals and future assassins) and Marcus Junius Brutus (the more famous Brutus, yet to receive a mention in either of the books) - I hope not. Overall, it's not a terrible book by any means, particularly if you're prepared to suspend your disbelief a little more than I was.
