5.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner, 1 Mar 2008
This review is from: The Abduction (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it took a little while to get really stuck into it as at first I found the charachters other than Grace herself rather dull and not particularly likeable, but by about 60 - 70 pages it was starting to get interesting and the charachters were developing a bit too. By this point it was one of those books where you keep thinking you'll just read another of the short chapters, and then found yourself reading lots more simply because it was so gripping. Lots of surprises along the way too.
Excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars great storytelling, 20 Mar 2007
By J. Mellor "stayleyvegas" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The follow up novel to the fantastic The Colour Of Law. The author is an ex lawyer turned author but to compare him to John Grisham would be a bad thing.

The Abduction actually is not a legal thriller and this is a brave move by the author to move away from his genre (or what you expect to be his genre after only one book) and take things in a slightly different direction.

The characters are big, brash and in your face although this does not detract from the book. In fact this aspect is probably pretty crucial to the plot. The three main adult characters all have issues and the worries of the world on their shoulders but it becomes clear why the further you go.

When you read the synopsis re Vietnam Vet comes to the rescue of a kidnapped relative the plot could be predictable although this one isn't. There are lots of sub plots linked mainly around some coincidences but they all come together beautifully. However, there are a couple of coincidences that requires the reader to take a little leap of faith, mainly relating to the Vietnam Vet meeting a pilot and a local police chief that are connected to his past but the author, overall, just about gets away with it.

This was a fantastically enjoyable read which for me was as good as his debut novel and the author should be applauded for going in a slightly different direction and carrying it off. However, I suspect the "technical" critics could be critical but who cares! I really enjoyed the book and so will lots of people.

Without a doubt, Gimenez is a superb storyteller.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rivetting Suspense Novel, 8 Mar 2008
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Abduction (Paperback)

Mark Gimenez grew up in Galveston County, Texas and was a partner in a Dallas law firm, before giving it up to start his own practice and to write. He still lives in Texas with his wife and two sons.

I read the author's first book The Colour of Law and thought it a terrific read, but if I thought that his next book would also be about the law, bearing in mind the author's background I could not have been more wrong. This book is a suspense thriller that will keep you hooked from beginning to end.

A brief synopsis of the storyline is that Grace, a young tomboy girl, daughter of hot shot lawyer Elizabeth Brice goes missing from football practice. When her mother asks where her daughter is the coach tells her she need not have bothered turning up as her uncle has already picked her up.

This begins a race against time to rescue Grace from the clutches of unknown kidnappers. Her father john is leading the search but he soon begins to realise that secrets from the past make his daughter's survival more and more unlikely as each second passes.
