Product Description

Review

Spillane's posthumous novel, completed by his sometime collaborator Collins (co-editors: A Century of Noir, 2001, etc.), pits Mike Hammer against - who else? - Middle Eastern terrorists scrabbling for a priceless artifact.Taking a break from Professor George Hurley's dig, his son Matthew and his stepdaughter Jenna Sheffield, who also happens to be Matthew's secret sweetie, make a spectacular find in the Valley of Elah: a buried thigh bone whose owner stood over ten feet tall. No sooner do they identify it as a relic of Goliath, the Philistine fighter famed for his memorable defeat by David, than they're threatened by dozens of modern-day fighters. A swarthy stalker takes a potshot at Jenna hours before she picks up the bone from the friend they'd shipped it to, then tries to kill the couple and snatch the parcel from them. But Mike Hammer, everyone's favorite knight in tarnished armor (Black Alley, 1996, etc.), providentially rescues the pair, dispatching the first of many unnamed killers, and arranges for the artifact to be delivered to George Hurley's NYU lab. That's the cue for al-Qaeda, Homeland Security, the FBI, Mossad, an Israeli vigilante group and a megalomaniac theatrical impresario to take their best shot at stealing the giant's bone.Fans who aren't put off when Mike finally ties the knot with his preternaturally patient girl Friday, Velda Sterling, can relax. They're in good hands with Collins, who keeps up the vigilantism and the body count, tones down the violence and writes no worse than his master. (Kirkus Reviews)

From the Inside Flap

The bestselling author of shoot-em-up crime fiction is back with a twisty new tale starring his iconic tough hero Mike Hammer.
On an amateur dig in Israel, two students discover what appears to be the femur of a very large humanoid, and there's compelling evidence to suggest that it's the thigh bone of the Biblical giant, Goliath. Back in New York, they are heading into the subway carrying the carefully wrapped bone when a hitman attempts to kill them. Hammer comes to their rescue.
But it is only the beginning of their troubles as various factions will stop at nothing to get their hands on the precious item, each for their own venal and nefarious reasons. Hammer and his loyal assistant Velda assure once again that the decent guys triumph in this cracking post-9/11 hard-boiled detective thriller.
A week before his death, Mickey Spillane entrusted a substantial portion of this manuscript and extensive notes to his frequent collaborator, Max Allan Collins, to complete. The result is a thriller as classic as Spillane's own I, The Jury, as compelling as Collins's Road to Perdition, and as contemporary as The Da Vinci Code.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last ever new Mike Hammer novel??, 2 Jan 2009
By Big Mike (Bradford, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I rejoiced when I saw this was coming out. There has long been rumoured to have to been an unpublished Mike Hammer novel that the late, great Mickey Spillane left behind. One can only hope that there is more than just this one yet to be published. Although it was finished by Max Allan Collins, Mickey Spillane wrote the first and last parts of the book and left notes outlining the rest for Collins to complete. Mickey Spillane was the master of the hat and trenchcoat wearing, Colt .45 automatic pistol in hand, tough-guy with a soft-heart private detective who walked the dark and dangerous streets of New York City. Mickey Spillane was a great storyteller and made that you feel that you were right there with Mike Hammer on those foggy and rainy nights in the Big Apple while he was stalking or being stalked by his quarry. He drew you in and didn't let you go until the end of the story. He is greatly missed. Both he and Mike Hammer were truly one-of-a-kind. Nobody ever did this kind of detective fiction as well, let alone better or ever will. Grab this and relish it.
