Product Description

Review

A publishing sensation who seemingly came from nowhere ... crime fiction has seldom needed to salute and mourn such a stellar talent as Larsson s in the same breath - Sunday Times.

Just when I was thinking there wasn't anything new on the horizon, along comes Stieg Larsson with this wonderfully unique story. I was completely absorbed - Michael Connelly. --Reviews

Observer

A striking novel, full of passion, an evocative sense of place and subtle insights into venal, corrupt minds

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent tense thriller with a conscience, 14 Aug 2008
By J. Cronin "dudara" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
Some incredible thrillers are coming from Scandinavian countries these days. Anyone who is a fan of the Kurt Wallander series of books by Henning Mankell will know what I mean. Now we have a new addition to the shelf, courtesy of deceased author, Stieg Larsson.

This is the first volume in the Millenium trilogy and after finishing this first book, I am very much looking forward to the next two volumes. Larssson died in 2004 soon after delivering the manuscripts for 3 crime novels to his publisher. It's a pity that this gifted author isn't around for a long time to come.

The tale is split between the shady secrets of a wealthy family and the murky dealings of a famous businessman. Mikael Blomkvist, a recently convicted journalist, is hired by Henrik Vanger to investigate the disappearance of his niece almost 40 years ago. Vanger promises Blomkvist the means to clear his good name as part of the payment and Blomkvist accepts.

The author manages to maintain an excellent pace throughout, but still delivers a strong social lesson while providing the thrills. It is an intelligent thriller with a conscience. Probably one of the best of its kind in recent years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Read - Engrossing Triliogy, 22 Oct 2009
By T. Wright "2Wright" (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the first book in the brilliant 'Millennium Trilogy'. Dark, character driven plots in intrigue as events unfold revealing; corruption, secrets, lies, cover-ups, family intrigue and murder, with the flawed crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist and his side-kick (actually, Blomkvist may be the sidekick!!) the enigma that is the flawed genius Hacker Lisbeth Salander.

An intelligent and riveting read with strong characterization, brilliant storytelling that weaves in and out of the main story with twists and turns into side stories that are all meandering through the inter-connectedness of the three books in the trilogy that compel you to keep reading without taking a breath ....... Phew!

Starts with Blomkvist, fresh out of an exhausting expose of corruption in his magazine 'Millennium' and is asked to do a biography of tycoon Henrik Vanger's family where all is not as it seems. Dark secrets (one member of the family is a murderer - can Blomkist expose them?) threaten our protagonist as family loyalties cover up secrets. Can he get to the truth without destroying both his magazines ethical integrity?

Along the way he meets the enigmatic, but dangerously delinquent, security expert and hacker Lisbeth Salander. An independent loner and rebel who lives life according to her own law. She is not what she at first seems, but develops into an extraordinary character of deepening depth and the reader is drawn to feel an empathy with the troubled young woman as her multi-faceted character is slowly revealed tantalizingly as a sinuous and intertwining yarn sewn through the fabric of the story (and indeed the the trilogy). Salander becomes integral to unpicking the details and truth to get to the heart of the Vanger Corporation - but this puts the tough rebel in danger.

Other stories diverge from and merge into the main story as we go along with the main plot as more minor dramas unfold along the way. There are also the odd romantic interlude or two to lighten the darkness of the story. As the story (and indeed, the trilogy) develops you fully invest in the characters of the hero & heroine and urge them on through their highs and lows, wins and losses. A thoroughly riveting read - one I'm sure I shall return to again and again.

It's such a pity Steig Larsson didn't live to see the fruits of his labour - it would have been interesting to see what he would've written next?

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed but compelling... , 6 April 2009
By N. Graham "normski-beat" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a real conundrum, rarely have I had such mixed opinions about a book. On the one hand the whole story is compelling, certainly keeps you reading and makes you want to read the second volume. On the other hand, without giving away any spoilers, it is flawed in so many places. Some of the characters are one dimensional and yet intrigueing, while parts of the plot, especially the way the central mystery of Harriet's disappearance is solved, leave many questions. For example I find it hard to accept that the police would have missed the breakthrough discovery that leads to the answer.

There lies the conundrum that is this book. It has great flaws and yet not once did I feel I wanted to give up. Not perfect by any means but compelling nonetheless.
