2.0 out of 5 stars No more than the very basics, 9 Oct 2008

I agree with the first comment. Just recieved this book to find that its more of a "booklet" than a book, so for £20 it is a bit light. Even though it only covers the basics, it does so at a very beginner level, and offers little or no depth beyond that. That said, in fairness the book is aimed at getting started with designer, so in that sense it does wot is says on the tin.
There is a market for Mike to write a book in this style but which covers MUCH greater depth,- like exploring every facet of the much raved about "Dataviews" which is a topic that has many pitfalls - like how to sort/group/filter 'Linked' Datasources which is extremly frustrating and difficult (go ahead try it).

Overall - Not bad, but too shallow, it wont help me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Expensive, 28 Aug 2008
By A. P. Laws "SharePoint newbie" (Gt Yarmouth, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm relatively new to SharePoint and so far learnt all I know from the The Microsoft® SharePoint® Step by Step Kit: Microsoft Windows® SharePoint Services 3.0 Step by Step and Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer ... Microsoft Office Sharepoint Designer 2007. So I wanted to know more and saw this recently published book. Mike is an excellent author who has produced a very readable book, however he does not go far enough - no information on customized pages or page layouts and his treatment of master pages will not help you develop your own in a real SharePoint environment. If this had been the first book on the market about SharePoint Designer (SPD) then, yes I would recommend to buy it. However there is a better book for beginners - Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Designer 2007 Step by Step (BPG-step by Step). It's nearly two years since the release of SPD and I was expecting more, especially as this is so newly published. Another reason not to buy this book is the cost, for £20+ I expect more than 188 pages - very expensive - I did not get my money's worth. Mike nice try - could do better.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Author Likes It, 20 Aug 2008

Call me biased but I think this is a very useful book. If you want a straightforward guide to building SharePoint sites then this is the book for you.
