Product Description

Product Description

In 489AD a new group of barbarians entered the ravaged and shattered land of Italy. Thirteen years ago the last Roman Emperor of the West had been deposed and the Western Empire lay in ruins, a plaything for the barbarian armies that fought and rampaged across it. Within four years their leader Theodoric stood over his dying predecessor sword in hand as he gasped his last words - 'Where is God?'. There was little to suggest that 33 years later this man would have proved to be one of the greatest rulers Italy had ever had, a worthy heir to the Emperors he replaced. The Goth bestrode not simply Italy, but Spain, the Balkans and southern France.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious!, 16 April 2009
By E. Cooper (Cyprus) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A hard going and relentless catalogue of events concerning Theoderics life, written with little passion or feeling.
Invasions and battles skimmed over in short paragraphs, two dimensional characters come and go with no great meaning. This novel could easily have been expanded to a trilogy (Iggulden's Conqueror series)with more of a gripping storyline, gritty battles and characters with more depth.
One particularly annoying point was Roman Plebians speaking with a cockney accent!! Does Mr Laidlaw, being a Scot, have an inherent distaste for Londoners?
On a positive note, this book is ideal for sufferers of insomnia!

2.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity, 12 Jun 2009
By T. M. Wilson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This story has all the ingredients to be a truely rivetting tale. However the author has minimised what could have been an epic and major events and characters are consigned to being little more than brief notes that are little more than jottings. As a previous reviewer has already said this could have been a trilogy given the ingredients at hand. The story of the man who took a decrepit Rome and almost recreated the empire is worth more than a what is a pretty short and quick read. The actual book swings between being a basic history of events and attempts at creating a story almost as if the author was unable to make up his mind as to what he realy wanted to write. Ultimately the result is unsatisfactory and left me feeling a true opportunity had been missed

I wish the previous review had been available before I bought it.I can only agree, the author has omitted one essential ingredient......a story.
