5.0 out of 5 stars an entertaining and perceptive read, 19 Nov 2009
By Paul Grainger (Lincoln, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For about three years Mary Beard, professor of classics at Cambridge University and classics editor of the Times Literary Supplement, has been writing a blog on the TLS website. Its central themes of classical history, the universities and the profession of teaching, are conveyed to the reader by way of glimpses of her day-to-day life as a don. But she also broadens her scope by commentating of worldwide issues as well as some the irritating trivia of contemporary society.

A Don's Life is a collection of blog posts which includes some of the comments made by respondents. And it is the latter, when read in conjunction with Mary Beard's acerbic wit and perceptive observations - and the occasional rant - that make this a thought provoking and entertaining volume.

With a final thought. When presented in book form, one is relieved of some of the distractions and impositions of reading off a computer screen, such as scrolling and everchanging backgrounds, thus providing a more relaxing reading experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant for any lover of the Classics, 23 Oct 2009
I've been following Prof Beard's blog, and the publishers very kindly sent me a review copy - it's brilliant, funny, and a must-have for any fan of the Classics. This will be my stocking filler this year!
