Product Description

Review

"Wonderful, believable heroes and villains, a fantastic, driving plot that defies convention and keeps you guessing, and a stunning, shattering climax that will haunt you for weeks. But it also resonates with a deep, profound sadness, a longing for the simplicity of childhood, and the answers you can find in other people to the questions in your own life. It's brilliant. - William Hill, Hodder" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Marcel Berlins, The Times

`Tana French's IN THE WOODS is a terrific debut . . . French's
psychological insights into the damaged policeman's torment combine
grippingly with the clammy atmosphere that surrounds the lethal woods. As
an example of a novel in which the past returns to haunt the present, this
scores very high marks.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars not what the cover leads you to expect..., 4 Jan 2008
This review is from: In the Woods (Paperback)
Unlike many of the other reviewers I really liked this novel precisely because not every loose end is neatly sewn up like in a two hour TV adaptation.

I am an avid crime reader and I must say I was taken aback slightly by this novel as the cover is somewhat misleading and makes you expect something else...for me the strength of the writing was strong enough to overcome this and I had decided earlier on that this is a novel of friendship and human nature more than plot.

I thoroughly enjoyed the vivid characters and constantly changing relationships and subtle humour in the novel as it made a refreshing change from the typical whodunnit with troubled jazz loving copper than saturates the market.

Read this one with an open mind instead of taking the cover at face value and see what you think...I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the calibre of writing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what you expect, 12 April 2007

This review is from: In the Woods (Hardcover)
when reading the back of this book the expectations of an exciting and spooky book all fill you however this book in the end leaves you dispapointed and the horror and firghtenting book you thought you were letting urself in for turns out to be an average murder solving dectective novel.
French writes well and i did enjoy the characters and their relationships however the way she only lets you into the result of one of the murders is disapointing because all you really care about is what happened in the woods to adam years ago. it seems to the reader as if in the end french cud not think of a good enough story and so left it out completely. So in the end there is nothing really that sinister that is waiting in the woods, nothing that she lets us in on anyway"!

3.0 out of 5 stars WHAT IS IN THE WOODS !!????, 18 April 2007
By C. Bridgen "colsee" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: In the Woods (Hardcover)
The cover was what attracted me first to this book and reading all the blurb made me grab it off the shelf and look forward during my week off to a good read.

It starts off very well and captures you into reading just a few more pages, like all good books should. Two thirds through I started to worry that little had really happened, yet I still had faith that any page now a significant event would happen.

Just as it seemed as it was upon me...the book ended at the bottom of a page with no conclusion. I actually emailed the publisher as I really thought that it was a misprint and I was missing the last pages!
I got a reply from the actual editor (impressed huh?) who said that the world (?) seemed divided about the ending and that as the editor she believes the ending is excellent. Well, sorry but no one reviewing the book so far does and I suggest you all email the editor at the website on the book.
Its a real shame as i still enjoyed it and I think the author has alot of potential but she told me that there is no plans to make a follow up (which would have made more sense) but the next book does involve one of the main characters Cassie in a different story.

I think to retrieve any credibility that she should rethink and put us all out of our real misery! DON'T YOU?

A very good detective murder story that loses its way big time and the ending is a complete joke I am afraid. It actually made me very angry which was the oposite to the rest of the book.
Borrow it if you can and see what all the fuss is about.
