Product Description

Product Description
It is the year 274 AD (After Darwin), in a world that has completely rejected religion and a regime rules which forbids faith of any kind. Instead, it is Darwin who is The Saviour, and only in science is everyone allowed to believe. In this world, Raul and his sister Arym live in a nuture house, cared for by the state, having never know their mother. It is a strict but simple life, until Raul begins to have doubts about the regime and rebels against the unwavering and unquestioning beliefs of those around him.
As a result of his rebellion, Raul and his sister are sent away to The Santorium, to be ‘Cured’ of their disbelief. But this is only the beginning... Will Raul allow himself to be ‘cured’ of his doubts and become an unthinking believer like his sister, or is there another way to survive?

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for thinking teenagers...and adults!, 29 Oct 2008
By S. Diment "sue_diment" (Wolverhampton, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Cure (Black Apple) (Paperback)
"The Cure" is a science fiction story set on a future earth. The government, called "The Republic" has outlawed all forms of religious belief - indeed, all belief at all except the one that they choose to promote, which is a secular scientific one, based on evolution and Darwinism. The population is indoctrinated from a young age, and children who show signs of independent thought are "treated" by healers. Raul and his half sister Arym fall into this category, and are sent to an isolated island, to have their doubts educated out of them (or if that fails, stronger measures can be applied).

The book is a controversial one, because it deals with a particularly strong form of the age old feud between those who believe in God and scientists who believe in evolution. As a result it has upset some readers and reviewers. But I think this misses the point. This book is really an argument for freedom to believe what you want - it doesn't matter what you believe as long as you have the strength to make your own way, and your own choices. The only winners in this book are the characters who gain the freedom to live (and die) as they wish. The author is (I believe) a christian, as it happens - but I think you would have to read this book very carefully to be able to tell that from what is written here!

"The Cure" is also a very moving, emotional book, that can't fail to incite a response in it's readers (probably even if they don't like it!). Given the pressures to conform that exist in our society today (particularly amongst the young) this book makes some interesting arguments. But it's not a story that all teenagers will be able to relate to - one to give to an older teenager perhaps, or one who likes a book that makes them think. You probably need to be able to penetrate some of the subtleties of the arguments, and understand some of the reasons why Raul and sister persevere against the odds.

It's compelling reading, and impossible to put down once you get hooked. That's the best reason to read it. The next best reason is because it will touch you emotionally, and that makes it a great book. Otherwise the only thing you need to read and enjoy this book is an open mind and the ability to think for yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Creationist Science Fiction, 13 Sep 2007
By Farah "Farah" (Reading United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I've rated this a three because it is well written, but that's the problem. The Cure advocates Intelligent Design. It argues that aetheists cannot be moral and because humanists believe that humans are "nothing special" this will encourage people to treat others well. Atrocities committed in the name of God are mentioned, but only by the people who turn out to be misguided in other ways. Evolution is proved untrue by the means of probability theory. Plaster figures of renowned celberities are somehow worse than plaster figures of saints. A world based on secularism and science has somehow gone back in time and is very, very poor with low grade technology.
