Product Description

Product Description

'This book is about people in all parts of Britain who have given me a fresh insight into the needs and aspirations of our country, what is great about it now and how it can become greater in the future. It is the story of Britain's everyday heroes: the kind of heroes who live next door, and in the next street, and throughout our neighbourhoods - the kind of heroes we might ourselves become.' - Gordon Brown. In Britain's Everyday Heroes, Gordon Brown tells the stories of ordinary people whose willing commitment to a cause or a community has informed and inspired him. The stories tell of a real Britain neither flawless nor broken down but caring, innovative, passionate and determined. He tells of the woman who has been the inspiration behind community reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the leader of a campaign tackling gang culture in Manchester. Of the innovator transforming the way we use the Internet as a tool of democracy and the campaigner who has established the World's first Fairtrade Town. Of councillors leading local regeneration efforts and public servants going far beyond the parameters of their job. Of a new generation of social entrepreneurs proving that successful business can benefit communities. Of the creative pioneers who brought the arts to a deprived housing estate, gardening to the refugees and opera to the homeless. And of the carers, mentors, coaches and volunteers he has met who give of themselves quietly, every day, never expecting praise or recognition.

About the Author

A good cure for insomnia. Repeating the words 'hero' and 'courage' makes you neither heroic nor courageous. He should have written 'British Bullies' or 'Cowardice: the Autobiography'.

Available at bargain price in a remainder store near you (next to Cilla's 'Surprise, Surprise' annual).

5.0 out of 5 stars Community Links: 5*, 9 Mar 2009
This is my first Amazon review, and I've been motivated to submit it due to the negative reviews below that have, probably, been written without reading the book at all.

It is important to note that profits from this book go to community links. So you're doing the right thing by buying it; it will benefit others.

As to the work itself: this is, on occasion, an inspirational book concerning the impact that people can have on fellow human beings, and how individuals may help to make our society a better place (cliche alert). If the reader can subdue their own political bias, either for or against the writer, the stories within this book are reminders, in such a jaundiced age, that some people can, do, and will always, act with the interests of others at heart. It may sound naive to say that, but reading this book gave me the confidence to say just that without feeling a fool for doing so. So for that alone: I recommend it.

Even more important it is accesible, well written, and, rightly so, allows the people within to 'speak' for themselves. Brown acts as a written guide, helping the reader to connect to these people, and their stories, and due to his sensitive approach to this, the reader will not feel preached to, or intruded upon, which is important in any book such as this.

So that's why I've given it five stars: it refreshed my faith in humanity, it motivated me to begin seeking out ways I can give back to society, and it was written skillfully, and without reproach for the average reader who may do nothing at all.
