5.0 out of 5 stars Comics at their best from a writer and artist who deserve much more recognition, 3 Feb 2009

This bargain priced reprint is a great way to enjoy some classic comics. In fact, in many ways the story works better in this collection then it did originally as author Simon Furman has cherry picked the best issues and left out the filler. Normally I would feel a bit cheated that I didn't get the full story. But this approach works well with this material and keeps the pace of the story ticking over nicely. Also the authors introduction explains some of the editorial decisions and adds to the sense of history in reading this volume. And don't be fooled by the corporate toy franchise, because 'historical' is exactly what this volume is.

The story itself is the sort of epic that Simon Furman is loved for among original transformers fans. Whilst it is not his best work (that prize goes to Target:2006) it is brilliantly realized. What he achieved with Marvel's Tranformers UK comic is still staggering: going from writing filler to epic tales of gods and monsters that eclipsed the American strips in popularity and quality, to helming the US title itself. This book is a fine example of everything that was good in Furman's writing, and after a slightly slow introduction it whips along at a fair pace culminating in a breath taking climax.

But credit should also go to Geof Senior who draw many of the comics collected here. Nobody draws giant robots like he does. He is astoundingly talented, and he sure knows how to draw a good fight. The last issue here is one of the best battle scenes in comics history. It might even be the best, it's THAT GOOD! It's just a shame that he didn't draw all the issues here, and whilst the other artists are perfectly fine their panels just don't compare to Senior's.

What you have here is not just a good Transformers Comic, but a very very good comic in it's own right from a creative team every bit as talented as the most famous in comics. Fans of the recent Transformers live action movie may find this confusing at first as the set up is very different. If that's you then I recommend reading Target:2006 before you buy this book, or maybe watching Transformers the animated movie. But do make sure you get this book, it's well worth it!
Old skool fans will be delighted to find that this is one of those comics that has aged very well.
