5.0 out of 5 stars All the elements of a classic, 25 Jan 2006
By P. J. Krishnan "Pederosa" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Wanted (Paperback)
Some people are never pleased and they always point out some kind of flaw and this book does have a couple.

But for me it's all about suspending disbelief for a while and wishing you were somewhere else and someone else. Surely as comic book readers we all wished our parents had super powers and had passed them onto us. Surely we all wish that we could escape the mundane 9 to 5 routine...and this book tells that story with a good measure of hero double crossing and novel concepts thrown in. The plot is solid and keeps you gripped until the end. Not my chosen style of art work but good enough and more than compensated, as I say, by the plot. Definitely worth purchasing. Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Not vintage, 13 Oct 2005
This review is from: Wanted (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of the sick, gory, lurid and depraved but Wanted just seems to be trying a bit too hard. Characters are constantly casually killing innocent bystanders, mentioning recent rapes they've enjoyed, tossing around photos of child murders, but it's not really disturbing or sinister, just... desperate. I think maybe Millar's just too nice a guy to write this sort of stuff. The emotional interplay between some of these degenerate characters is just ludicrous. He's trying for Jim Thompson but it comes over more like a teenager swearing in front of an elderly aunt. The 'dangerous' pay-off is a bit much to take, as well, considering Millar will already have your money in his wallet by the time you read it. It's a fun, schlocky read but taking itself a bit too seriously.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 3 Jul 2008
By A. Kaye (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was looking forward to reading this and I haven't yet seen the film but I was left very let down. The story is intriguing and the artwork is excellent and I get the point of the story ( wishing you were someone else/somewhere else etc ) but at the end of the story the characters are very one-dimensional, you don't really care for them and whether they succeed or fail. The story is pretty hollow and it just never really goes anywhere. Shame.
