the return of jonah hex, 31 May 2007
a very popular comic character in decades gone by when western comics were in vogue, jonah hex is a bounty hunter with a horribly scarred face, who dresses in a confederate states of america uniform. The best tracker and hunter there is, he lives for his work and is very good at it. As the blurb puts it:
'he was a hero to some, a villain to others, and wherever he rode, men spoke his name in whispers. He had no friends, this jonah hex. Just two constant companions. Death, and the acrid smell of gunsmoke.'
A fascinating and very appealing character, as there are times when you wish you could be as tough as him.
Successfully revived for a new monthly comic, this volume collects the first six issues of that title. Each story is entirely self contained and stands totally alone from all the others. In these days of multi part comic stories that go on for years and require you to know decades old continuty, this is a welcome change. All are typical western tales, and very well written, with some stunningly good artwork from an artist called luke ross. Possibly the best one is the third, which features an appearance from bat lash, another old dc comics western hero, a hugely entertaining gunfighter/card shark/ladies man.
If you want a good western, you won't go wrong with this. If you want a good comic, you won't either. Buy it. It's worth it

jonah hex. the beginning, 15 Jan 2008
third in the series of collections of issues of jonah hex, a western comic from dc comics featuring a bounty hunter with a horribly scarred face who wears the uniform of a confederate cavalryman. each of these collects six issues of the comic, and this covers issues 13-18.
these are the first time the comic has done stories that are longer than just one part. the first three issues are a three part story where jonah is hunting soldiers who went rogue after the american civil war. he has a score to settle with them. the story contains lots of flashbacks that fill in a few details about his past, about which not a lot has been revealed.
Some of this slightly contradicts similar information from older jonah hex comics, available in jonah hex showcase volume one, and this story isn't quite as good as the origin one in that. But it's still a very good read that fills in the blanks well and has nice stylish art from artist jordi bernet.
the next two issues in this volume are a two part story called 'the ballad of tallulah black.' jonah gets involved with a girl who survived the murder of her family, but was horribly scarred in the process. she wants revenge. he can help her get it. but you know what they say about being careful what you want..
excellent art from phil noto makes this a strong tale and one to remember.
the final issue collected in this volume is a one part story which also has very strong artwork, and involves jonah helping a woman escape from trouble. but things are not what they seem. excellent art and strong writing with a memorable twist in the tale produce a story you won't forget in a hurry.
An excellent collection of one of the best comics out there today, and well worth getting

more short and sweet western goodness, 28 Jun 2007
Another collection of issues of jonah hex, the dc comics western title. All the six issues in this tell self contained one off western tales featuring jonah hex, the best bounty hunter around, who has a hideously scarred face and goes around wearing a confederate uniform.
there haven't been many western in comics in recent years, so it's a pleasure to see the character revived in such good stories as the ones you get here. And each are self contained one part stories, which is a nice change in these days of long continuity bound story arcs. Of the issues presented here, the best is probably the fifth, when hex teams up with el diablo, another old dc comics western character, to get some vengeance. The scenes where he talks with the man is el diablo by daytime about their relationship are just as compelling as their nightime rides to vengeance.
Great western. Great comic. Well worth getting
