Product Description

Product Description

Gotham City is plagued with crime and corruption in places high and low, but one man has taken a stand against evil of all forms: the dark avenger known as Batman. It is the beginning of the Dark Knight's war on crime, and it is progressing well - so well, in fact, that Bruce Wayne is finding time to look for love as well as fight crime. But then the mysterious 'Jack', a crack-shot psychopath with no sense of humour, begins to fixate on Batman, threatening both the life of Bruce Wayne's lover and the fragile peace Batman has established. Will the joke be on the Dark Knight?Written by Michael Green, writer and producer on the hit TV series "Heroes", with art by comics luminary Denys Cowan ("The Question"), this collection is no laughing matter!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor re-telling of the Joker Origin , 10 May 2008
By M. Jackson "MOJOMIKE" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This story is a massive disappointment, not only is the art disjointed and angular (not to my taste, kind of like a poor man's Klaus Janson) but it is also hard to follow at times. However were this the only fault I could forgive it, but the story line, plotting and characterization are appalling. I re-tells the joker story, with a new twist that re-defines the Joker as an out and out 2 dimensional psycho, not the tragically darkly comic, complex serial killer that he has been portrayed as of late. If this wasn't bad enough the actions of Batman himself cross a line that I feel isn't in keeping with his character. That the whole affair drags on for 140 pages is a big shame, as is the hardcover treatment, DC used to only do hard covers of the very best stories, now it seems any old rubbish gets deluxe HC treatment. So all in all save your money, or just spend it on the new re-issue of the Killing Joke, which is still the definitive Joker origin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly my favourite Joker story, 10 Sep 2008
Having read the previous 2 reviews of this book I was compelled to write my own since I could not disagree more. For me, this book was perfect and that's not something I say often.

Yes, this story does have the Joker with a slightly different origin but it is one that I feel is inkeeping with the Joker character - he is basically insane! And believe me, the Joker here is frighteningly insane and insanely evil. The dialogue in this book from the Joker will haunt you. His actions (one in particular that I won't mention here is especially disturbing - you'll know when you read it) will haunt you more.

But that isn't what makes this book so great. It's the fact that it not only delves into the psychological depths of a madman but into the darkness of the minds of TWO madmen. The instability of Batman in this book is brought right to the forefront. He is still the Batman we all know and love. He still wants to bring justice to the streets of Gotham. He still won't kill anyone, not even the Joker (another fantastic scene in this book!). But that darkness within Batman that drives him is explored in a much more daring manner in this story and what it comes down to is that Batman and the Joker are really just 2 sides of the same coin, and THAT ladies and gentlemen is why the Joker is the best Batman villain ever, and why this is such a phenomenal story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment..., 8 Jul 2008
I completely agree with MOJOMIKE below on this one. Having only got into batman a year or so ago and having already read the killing joke, going sane etc. i assumed DC wouldn't treat such a story which has been done so well before with anything other than great story telling, character design and art. This 6 part story was, however, awful. The art was inconsistent, the story telling was fragmented and a bit too dramatised (even for a batman story) and just doesn't even compare to the likes of the Killing Joke which was written years ago. Its a real shame they even allow comics like this to be written because lets face it they are not cheap (i read this series in single issues = 18 pounds total) and you expect a certain level of quality control/editing in a series such as Bartman which already has so many great stories within it (and as MOJOMIKE says how this qualifies for a HC treatment i really don't know). I didn't read but also heard the first arc in this series (rules of engagement) was terrible too which is enough to ensure i won't be picking up anymore copies of batman confidential... stick with the main batman title along with detectice comics which are both excellent.
