4.0 out of 5 stars Far better than expected, 12 May 2008

Knowing that this series of books was supposedly aimed at the teenage audience, I expected something fairly simplistic. However, I was nicely surprised that this seems to be a very well written book with good character detail (Cutter's feelings about Claudia/Jenny) and a well rendered sense of place (very good descriptions of Cuzco).
The political and mystery elements though push the time anomaly plot almost into the background, so readers expecting the 'chasing dinosaurs' style of the TV show might be a bit surprised.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Certainly more than they can do on the telly, 19 April 2008
By L. Pearse "squeezynz" (New Zealand) - See all my reviews

Shadow of the Jaguar takes the reader on an adventure into the Peruvian hinterland in search of an anomaly. Steven Savile captures the environment so well you sweat along with the characters as they battle extraordinary creatures and dangerous humans in the depths of the jungle. Everyone's on board, and they all get a chance to shine. Steven Savile keeps the pressure on and the last third of the book just speeds by. It's big budget and substantially less PG than the series, but that doesn't detract from the overall characterisations that remain right on the mark.
A welcome addition to any Primeval fan's library and a job well done by Steven Savile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so Gripping First novel, 7 Jul 2008
By Gareth Wilson "drosdelnoch2" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Taking the epic ITV 1 series to a new frontier this is the first of what we are assured of many books to follow that takes the Primeval team from the shores of the Britain deep into the heart of South America allowing the reader to see an anomaly in all its glory in what could possibly be the most apt setting for a story. Except that's where this tale begins to fall flat. Firstly whilst the original crew are back it seems to be set midway through the second series rather than catering to fans who know the history having just recently watched the final episode. The book is also full of in jokes and doesn't have any way for the uninitiated to get to know the characters as it assumes the reader knows all this. Yet not only do the assume this but they then take the time to give long winded speeches that are more info dump than anything else. Whilst it will more than likely please fans of the series it doesn't fulfil what I would deem as a necessity in bringing new people to the phenomenon. Hopefully future books will correct this oversight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Compliment to the series
This book nicely compliments the series itself. It also adds a slightly darker element to the show - instead of being suited to the kids, this is definately suited to its age... Read more
