4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin, 21 May 2008
By Bob Grist (London) - See all my reviews

The thing is, the Friday the 13th films were hardly high art Dostoevskian dramas. More so they were exploitation horror films full of gore and titillation. This graphic novel encapsulates the flavour of the early films quite well, even upping the level of titillation. True, as a 40 odd year old I find some of that amusing rather than exciting, but my 14 year old self (who sneaked into the cinema to see the first film all those years ago and paid the price with many a sleepless night afterwards) would have utterly adored this book and put it in his top ten list of graphic novels. The story is fine, the characters are interesting enough and, at times, the artwork is impressive and has a nicely cinematic quality to it. The main reason I enjoyed this book, though, was that I read it at night, in bed, alone, and found myself getting rather creeped out (even though, of course I pooh-poohed such an attitude as best I could) and found myself reverting back somewhat to that freaked out 14 year old that I once was. Didn't take me quite as long to get back to sleep this time, but I did throw the odd glance at the bedroom window to ensure no machete-wielding maniacs were mooching around in the garden.

2.0 out of 5 stars Your Unlucky Day, 18 May 2008
By Oliver Redfern (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I genuinely wanted to like this graphic novel. I wanted to come away from it thinking it had gone beyond the films and made something unique out of Jason Voorhees' story. And in a way it does, with plenty of exposed breasts and nipples (in a rate the films never managed) and non-stop homophobic language. It also lets you know from the start who survives Crystal Lake Camp, working the story into the survivor's memories. But a combination of highly unlikeable characters, a first act which suddenly gives way to the final act, and some cringe-worthy backstory involving 19th century colonists makes for an unsatisfying read. Plenty of interesting angles to the story, which could have been developed into a unique type of sci-fi/horror story, get dropped without any explanation. I can't imagine anyone enjoying this unless they get a hard on from toon nudity or disembowelments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it before the film remake comes out in 2009!, 30 Dec 2008
By J.P (England) - See all my reviews
Do you like Friday the 13th (i.e. blood, gore and murdered teenagers)?
Do you like to read comic books or graphic novels?

If you answered yes to both these questions, then you will want to read this. These side-stories are true to the film and what you think you will get is what you will get. Simple as.
