4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, 4 Oct 2007
By DocBhoy (Invercargill , New Zealand) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Grant Morrison is a well respected comics author , whilst Frank Quitely is a much admired comicbook artist . Together they have been putting together this beautiful series in single issues , collected here are the first six of those .

The art and colouring are a wonder to behold , and Grant's script shows that there's still some life in Supes , and that we haven't read all there is to read about him . There is some humour as well as pathos , and each chapter is a complete storyline .

If there is one criticism to be levelled at the series , it's the disjointed nature of this collected edition , due to the stand alone stories .

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Superman Graphic Novel!, 3 Jun 2007
By Mr. S. W. Steel "stephensteel" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you have looked at some of my other reviews, you will realise that i am a huge Superman fan - and i own many more graphic novels than those i have reviewed here on Amazon.
The basic plot of this volume is, Lex Luthor plays a trick on Superman and gets him to go too close to the sun, and when Superman returns to earth he finds that all of his powers are enhanced.......but at a terrible price..........he is dying! The rest of the graphic novel is concerned with how he chooses to tell his friends and family, and how he hides this from his enemies.
I liked the premise of this graphic novel a lot. It revisits Superman's early days - his earth parents appear, Pete Ross and Lana Lang get some space, Lois gets a big chunk and so does Lex Luthor. I enjoyed it especially because it is more about the character of Superman, rather than him appearing in lots of set pieces/fight scenes.
The artwork is really good too - it isn't in the same league as Kingdom Come (not much is to be honest!), but the artwork here is secondary to the story, and that is a welcome change in my opinion.
The nearest Superman graphic novel i can compare this to is Superman For All Seasons - thought the artwork is better here! So if you read that one, you will definitely enjoy this.
In fact, I think this graphic novel could be made into the sequel of Superman Returns.............why not read this and see what you think?!

4.0 out of 5 stars What starts of Great ends with OK, 4 Jun 2007
By M. Royle "SuperShazam!" (England, UK) - See all my reviews

Being a huge comic fan i had to get this book! It starts off Superb, the art, the story evreything! The man of steel is dying(wont spoil how)and is setting things out in his life, starting with telling lois the truth!

The book is made up of 'episodes',all packed with fun, even black kryptonite, though it is the last episode 'Death in Smallville' which is the most disapointment. It feels rushed and the death lacks emotion and makes you not really care.

All in all, great comic. I look forward to the other volumes that will wrap up the plot left hanging at the end of this volume.
