4.0 out of 5 stars Successfully used to traverse the Kruger Park, 5 Sep 2008
By Chris R (Devon, UK) - See all my reviews
We bought this guide for our trip to the Kruger Park as it had a map included. The book proved invaluable for our trip and enabled us to drive across the park a few times using various routes with no other maps or guides.

The map itself is quite large when unfolded and needs to be refolded down to a handy size otherwise you can't see out of the car!

The book has just enough information in it about all the different routes across this amazing National Park to allow the reader to make informed decisions about where to go and roughly how long it will take.

A word of warning if you are a first time visitor to the park - leave plently of time to get back to the gate before it shuts if you are not staying in the Kruger Park itself. We estimated how long it would take to get back, but were held up on a couple of occasions by herds of buffalo and impala. On one occasion I saw some Police in the Park hidden at the roadside with a speed camera, so you can't just put your foot down to make up the lost time!!

If you are going to the Kruger, or on any safari, it's really worth investing in a decent camera - preferably a DSLR with at least 200mm zoom lense (mine was 300mm) or a 'Superzoom' or 'bridge' camera with 12x zoom or more. You will not regret the financial outlay when you see the difference in your photos and you could sell the camera on an auction site when you get home :-)

Back to the book - it's an entertaining read and good value. Also it's quite a handy size so you can easily carry it in a bag or even a large pocket. Comes in a waterproof plastic cover. Loses a star as I felt some of the photos were a bit old and the map could have been slightly more detailed and a more practical size/layout.

Having said that, I couldn't find anything available that was better than this book at the time I was buying it (late 2007)
