2.0 out of 5 stars Burgundy deserves better than this, 5 Sep 2006
My initial eagerness to read this book soon gave way to disappointment. It seemed that Matthews had failed to fulfil the promise implicit in the book's title.

Although the book had plenty of words written in the apparently breathless style that seems to be the norm for so much to do with food or wine, all too often the text failed to deliver.

There was no obvious consistency in the "value for money" ratings given by Matthews. It would have been so much more useful if he had rated wines within stated price bands or by using some sort of specified yardstick.

I found errors that should never have slipped through the net, such as incorrect 'phone numbers or inadequate addresses. These are fundamental errors in a book supposedly written to encourage wine-lovers to go off the beaten track.

The brief chapter on importing wine from France into the UK was less than helpful. My own enquiries with Customs established that the procedure outlined in the book was intended for commercial imports only and was not available to individuals wishing to import wine for their own use.

All in all, I was disappointed by this book. It would require a major rewrite before I would recommend it to others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some great recomendations, 3 May 2007

While the book certainly has faults, it was great for finding more obscure vineyards. The ones we tried were welcoming and sold excellent wine and this is after all the point of such a guide.
