"'A first rate list of contributors... Hair raising!' Time Out 'All we need say is buy it.' Starlog"

Product Description

Over 25 short story masterpieces from writers such as Louis de Bernieres and Ian Rankin - modern literary tales to chill the blood. This spine-chilling new anthology of 20th and 21st century tales by big name writers is in the best traditions of literary ghost stories. It is just a little over a hundred years ago that the most famous literary ghost story, "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James, was published and in the intervening years a great many other distinguished writers have tried their hand at this popular genre - some basing their fictional tales on real supernatural experiences of their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars haunting selection, 3 Dec 2007

A first-rate collection of ghost stories - ideal for this time of year.

The reason I give it 4 stars is that I wasn't too happy about the way the stories were introduced. It's good to have the bios of the authors involved. Even giving away the settings and dates of the stories was fine. But to present an italicised extract specifying the type of ghost in each one genuinely annoyed me. It was like a spoiler and I had to cover the top of each story so I wouldn't know what was around the corner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eerily good, 9 Feb 2009
By S. Datta "I wonder if..." (London, UK) - See all my reviews

A great and extensive collection of stories, well organised by style and including several contemporary stories to match classics from the like of M R James. Perfect for cold autumn nights, shivering by the fire. The only negative I'd note is that also noted by the other reviewers. Having a paragraph at the start of the story detailing either the ghost or a particularly spine-tingling moment from the story really adds nothing to the enjoyment of them, and actively detracts.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good collection, 29 Dec 2008
This is a thoroughly good read. A number of the stories are genuinely shocking- J.B.Priestley's story about the man trapped in an Underground train is brilliant, as is the one from Philip Pullman.
I agree that the synopsis at the front is a bit annoying, but I enjoyed the details provided about the author, which are helpful for further study.
