Product Description

Review
"'Is there any better gift for a writer than the chance to put a book together of writing by others that she or he has loved? Is there any truer gift to a reader from any writer?' Ali Smith"

Erica Wagner, The Times 2 Sept 2006
It is a real treat...a leisurely browse through a writer's own bookshelves.

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging stuff, 21 Sep 2006
By Mr. M. J. Bowen "middle name : NR" (some NOT RANDOM room) - See all my reviews

Although the press reviews above say how this book is like having a privaledged rumage through a favourite author's books, I came to this unaware of Ali Smith and was attracted by the concept. I like the idea of a compendium of prose extracts, poetry and even (occasionally) cartoons. I finished it having been introduced to some new writers to follow up on, reaquainted with old favourites (there is a great e. e. cummings poem) and generally feeling pretty good. So, then, asks someone, "where is the selector's presence?" - well I have to say it's barely there, apart form the introduction there are no piece commentaries or anything. So I am a fan of the book and Ms/Mrs Smith obviously has good taste but I think I will be checking out of her choices rather than her own work in the near future. Though of course she couldn't have selected any of her own writing, some more insight into why the individual pieces were special to her would have been nice. I would like to see more in this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Gift, 7 Aug 2007
By Rod Bryans "Creative Maven" (Jersey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As Ali Smith says "This is a gift from writer to reader". It is both a gift and a clue. Gifts don't need explanations but should be received gratefully. Clues should be amassed until they reveal all. Each selection provides a facet of identity. I like both gifts and clues. I like this book and like the previous reviewer look forward to the next book in the series.
