Product Description

Review
'A ground-breaking book in the subject material and presentation. It's easy to read, yet helps the reader understand the complex nature of self-harm. The life stories are authentic and incredibly moving.' William Stewart, author of A-Z of Counselling: Theory and Practice 'Many people struggle with more than one self destructive coping mechanism...which makes Sutton's views especially interesting. Great to have a British list of contacts and resources, and wonderful to have a book that informs and doesn't condescend.' Reader review - Amazon '...an ideal book for those who self injure, particularly those who also have an eating disorder or alcohol problem. Sutton deals with what is a delicate subject with great sensitivity...this is a book that could change lives. Reader review - Amazon

Product Description
In this revised, expanded, and deeply compelling second edition, Jan Sutton draws on the testimonies of those trapped in the cycle of self-injury, and former self-injurers, as well as the latest research and developments in the field. It is a book of hope and healing designed to offer help and support to self-injurers; understanding to the self-injurer's kith and kin; and insight to volunteers or professionals whose work brings them into contact with people who hurt themselves. It's a perplexing behavior with many names - self-injury, self-harm, self-mutilation, self-inflicted violence, self-cutting and self-abuse to name some. It's a puzzling and perplexing phenomenon, which shocks and frightens those who encounter it. Furthermore, it's widely reported to be reaching 'epidemic proportions', particularly among young people, and research has shown that it frequently goes hand-in-hand with eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dissociative disorders. Those caught in its clutches find it difficult to stop because of its addictive nature, or are reluctant to try because they say it helps them 'feel better,' 'more in control,' 'more alive or real,' or that it inhibits suicidal thoughts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for sufferers and everyone else!!!!, 11 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Wow, quite a spetacular book! Written with such understanding and with such indepth knowledge it is one of the best self harm books on the market. Each section is broken up into small chapters so although the book is the size of a textbook it is very easy to read. Jan has written this in simple language that is easy to understand, whilst still using research to back up her claims and ideas. It is therefore an essential read for mental health professionals.
It provides the voice of the sufferer throughout, with the help of poetry, stories and pictures. Thats what makes it so different it doesn't speak from the medical model or the social model, it is simply the voice of the self harmers and the authour Jan has simply provided a space for this to be heard.

Alot of new ideas about self harm are sensitivley discussed and explored. This book really is extensive and deals with every aspect of self harm including help for friends and family.

It is a book that comforts me, understands me, accepts me and believes in my battle for recovery.
I hope you find the same in your copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Healing the Hurt Within, Second Edition, 29 Jan 2006
By Barent W. Walsh (Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews
Jan Sutton is a long-time advocate for the enhanced understanding and treatment of self-injury. She operates two websites devoted to the topic, including the highly recommended www.siari.co.uk. The second edition of “Healing the Hurt Within” is an important resource for self-injurers and their significant others. Starting with the attractive artwork on the cover by a self-injurer in recovery, the book is unique in giving self-injurers an equal voice in presenting their stories. The book is replete with poems, artwork, and autobiographical stories about dealing with self-injury. Many of the stories are evocative and inspirational.

Ms. Sutton has years of experience as a counselor and she offers a great deal of sound advice for those who want to recover from self-injury. She clearly differentiates self-injury from suicide and offers an interesting explanation regarding “the repetitive cycle of self-injury.” Ms. Sutton is particularly knowledgeable about self-injurers who have experienced trauma and she writes about this subject with great sensitivity and skill.

Perhaps most importantly, she offers many suggestions regarding “healing hints” that can help individuals deal with their emotional distress without resorting to self-injury. In addition, the book offers an extensive list of resources that may be helpful to self-injurers. This book is highly recommended for self-injurers, their significant others, and professionals who work with them.

Barent Walsh, Author of “Treating Self-Injury: A Practical Guide.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Healing the hurt within, 12 Dec 2005
What stands out for me in this second edition is the personal testimonies. As someone who used to self-harm I think this book will be invaluable for therapists and those working with clients who self-harm. There are many books on self-harm and numerous web sites, none offer such insight into what is behind self-harm. These personal testimonies will enable a deeper understaning and bring the subject alive for those seeking greater understanding.
Too often those who self-harm are misunderstood or wrongly diagnosed. I think it is great that self-harmers have a voice and a chance to tell their stories.
This second edition is practical and very readable. I think it is essential reading for everyone who has contact with someone who self-harms. It is rare to finds a book which is appropriate for a wide audience from professionals to friends and families wanting to understand in order to support.
