I have also discovered that people are invited to be in this Guide without their garden ever having been seen by the author. This does not happen with the Good Gardens Guide. I have also been to several gardens that are in this book which are really dreadful. I'd be very cautious about relying on it.

You might expect this book to be an objective selection of gardens, especially given the association with the Royal Horticultural Society.

However, the editor gave himself away by accidentally uploading a comment from his personal notes about Veddw House Garden on to the RHS website.He said that this garden was not to be reassessed for inclusion until the owner had apologised to him for some (imagined) personal slight.

Try the Good Gardens Guide instead?

The information in this guide would have been acceptable in 1980. We have moved on. We have the internet!

It is good to have a book in your hands that you can hold, caress, and smell (maybe you don't feel the same way, poor things!). It is even better when you can take it into your car to explore this wonderful land of ours.

Not so good when you have to ring EVERY site and confirm the information before setting off. The authors of this book have compiled a huge amount of information, but don't seem to keep it up to date. Salley Gardens, West Bridgford (actually in Ladybay near Holme Pierrepont), has been closed for AT LEAST two years. I know because I tried to find it and it was A LITTLE dilapidated when I arrived! And why isn't Six Acres nursey near Loughborough logged as it is a MUST SEE plant nursery.

It isn't possible to do a search for a particular garden designer such as Piet Oudolf or Gertrude Jekyll.

It isn't possible to look for gardens with a particular planting style such as: white, cottage, topiary, vegetable, or walled garden.

There aren't maps for each county showing where the gardens are located.

There aren't enough pictures of the gardens. I would be willing to travel 3 hours (each way) for a garden that had a fabulous picture (and a good cafe).

The main problem is that the guides cover a two year span such as 2007-8. Dates of opening are given, but who knows which year the dates are for? NOT ME!!!

Don't buy it if there is an alternative.
