Synopsis
Launched in 1936 in the "Sunday Post" in Scotland, "The Broons" is still one of the most popular children's comics and annuals in Scotland with a readership covering all generations. "The Broons" annual sells over 100,000 copies each year. This is a slip-cased facsimile of the first ever "Broons" annual published in 1939 after the comic had launched in 1936. It will appeal to all of the generations who have read the strip and will provide a great insight to the early days of the strip, as well as fulfilling the promise of all annuals, to make you laugh. It belongs to an age where certain phrases were acceptable. No doubt in 50 years some of today's phrases and ideals will be frowned upon, but there's no point in trying to hide the fact they once existed and were accepted. At the end of the day, it's a comic. Read it and enjoy. It'll appeal to all ages. Once your familiar with Scottish dialects, anyhoo!  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? In these days of removing 'offensive' wording or references, it's good to see that some publishers won't be bullied into altering historical texts and imagery. The reprint still has the original racist references to black people inside - the publishers have refused to ammend it. Although it is still funny in parts - it is not suitable for children who could be influenced by the racist comments inside and in particular could use of some words which will cause offence to ethnic minorities in todays world.
