Product Description

Product Description

The only internationally successful, million-selling group to emerge from the late seventies London punk scene, the Clash set out to change the world with a potent mix of politics, blazing rock?n?roll and iconic imagery. The band?s interest in social issues - unemployment, racism, police oppression - and fascination with international events - terrorism, CIA-backed coups, the shadow of nuclear war - reflected the turmoil of an era when the great cultural revolution of the sixties appeared to have failed. It was an agenda mirrored in the Clash?s music, which swiftly evolved from ferocious punk rock to incorporate reggae, ska, funk, jazz, soul and hip hop. Passion is a Fashion draws on over 70 interviews with the key participants in the story ? roadies, producers, friends and fans - and above all conversations with the band members themselves, to give the first real insight into what went on behind the scenes during the Clash?s ten-year career. With a superb sense of place, from the streets of south London and the grimy bedsits of Notting Hill to the dislocated luxury of Los Angeles, it charts the Clash?s picaresque progress through the penurious days of the early punk scene and their groundbreaking Rock Against Racism gigs, to the arduous touring to break America and the making of the classic London Calling album, all the way to the band? s eventual dissolution and the untimely death of Joe Strummer. The book sheds new and unexpected light on the early lives of the Clash?s classic line-up - Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon - and examines the complex tensions that led to the dramatic ousting of first drummer Headon and then founder-member Jones. It also examines the often-overlooked contribution of the band?s extraordinary, larger-than-life manager, Bernard Rhodes ? one of the great rock band impresarios of all time. Gritty, independent-minded, compelling and above all authoritative, Passion Is A Fashion is the biography the Clash have long deserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars the only book that matters, 6 April 2005
After following the Clash for the best part of a quarter of a century i always found that the many books written about them fell short of telling the full story,i knew all the basics and most of the myths but this was never enough ,now with the release of this excellent book can the casual reader or hard core fan find out not only how the band met, formed, concieved their music, toured, conquered the states and ultimately imploded, but more importantly why it all happened, this book is the only one of its kind to go behind all the myth's and find out(as told by all who were there) just how four people can be in the right place at just the right time, and as such is a fascinating insight into not only the Clash but Rock'n' Roll itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cracking Biography Of The Only Band That Matters, 14 Mar 2005
By Gary Bell (Northumberland, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a cracking read for anyone who loved the Clash, documenting each band member's life up to the day that they met and formed the most important band of their, if not every, generation. All the key players tell their side of the story and what a story it was! Pat Gilbert shows his expertise as a music jounalist as with great compassion as he tells it how it was, warts and all, from their modest beginnings through to their eventual demise and beyond. The book ends with an emotional epilogue bidding farewell to Joe Strummer; the man who changed so many of our lives. A must for anyone who this band moved and politicised with their words and music.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHO WERE THE CLASH ?, 26 Oct 2005
In the first few pages you will find out more about who Joe (or John or Johnny or Woody) was and the rest of the group. This book trawls through their early lives, giving an insight into what made each character tick, and what made them the people they were. Extremely insightfull and well written. Well worth every penny and more!
